San Cristóbal de las Casas is a charming city nestled in the central highlands of the southern state of Chiapas, Mexico. Cobblestone streets lead to colorful markets full of local handicrafts, Mayan textiles, amber jewelry, and pottery which the city is famously known for. At its heart, the city is decorated with beautifully preserved Spanish colonial buildings such as Cathedral de San Cristóbal and the 16th-century church Templo de Santo Domingo. This place also serves as a gateway to the nearby Sumidero Canyon and the indigenous communities like San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan, offering fascinating glimpses into pre-Hispanic customs and beliefs. This destination offers an exclusive experience of Mexican culture and tradition, making it a perfect spot for history buffs and culture lovers alike.

San Cristóbal de las Casas

I would say San Cristobal de las casas was the most underrated city on my trip to Mexico. The central area is super cute you can walk around and it felt very safe even at night. There are tons of restaurants and good cafes and they weren't super expensive. In terms of activities definitely visit Canyon de Sumidero and the nearby villages of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan. In these villages you can learn a lot about Tzotzil Maya culture.

I lived here for 3 years. 
It is one of my favourite places on earth. A little vortex of all the best people. It’s a magical city that grants what you want even if you just think of it! So be careful what you wish for. 
I felt totally safe. 
I felt included. 
I felt like I had a home away from home. 
I will go back and live here one day
