How safe is Puerto Morelos?

Safety at nightModerate

Puerto Morelos is a relatively safe destination in Mexico, however, like anywhere else, caution should be taken especially when walking alone at night. While most of the locals are friendly and crime rate is generally lower compared to other Mexican cities, nighttime can bring increased risk. Therefore, it is recommended to stick to well-lit and tourist-friendly areas, avoid desolate streets or beaches, and always be aware of your surroundings. Additionally, use of reputable taxi companies when traveling at night is suggested instead of walking.

Public transportationModerate

Public transportation in Puerto Morelos, can variably be safe and unsafe. Buses and taxis are generally reliable during the day but extra caution is advised at night. Also, unmarked taxis should be avoided. It is recommended to use licensed cabs from regulated taxi stands when possible. Taxis can be preferable for their convenience and speed, but it’s important to agree on a fare before departing to avoid overcharges. Renting bikes or golf carts for transportation can be a safe and fun alternative.

Street harassmentLow

Puerto Morelos is known as a safe and peaceful tourist destination. However, as in any foreign locale, street harassment can and does occur but on a significantly less scale. Most locals are friendly and respectful. However, it's still recommended to take general safety precautions such as avoiding desolate areas at night or not attracting unnecessary attention to oneself.

Petty crimesLow

Petty crimes such as pickpocketing or bag snatching are relatively low in Puerto Morelos. As a popular tourist destination, the area has good security and plenty of vigilant local business owners. Nevertheless, like any tourist area, it's essential to remain alert and safeguard your belongings. Small crimes do occur but they are not overly frequent. Reducing risks often comes down to practicing safe travel habits.

Tap waterUnsafe

In Puerto Morelos, it is generally advised not to drink tap water as it is not reliably filtered or purified, making it potentially unsafe for consumption. It's better to use bottled water for drinking and even for brushing your teeth.
