How safe is Mérida?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Mérida is considered one of the safest cities in Mexico. At night, the city center and areas with high tourist activity are typically bustling and well lit. However, like any large city in the world, certain outlying neighborhoods can be less secure. It's advisable to take a taxi rather than walking alone late at night, particularly in unfamiliar or less populated areas. As long as you're mindful, aware of your surroundings, and avoid taking unnecessary risks, Mérida can be safely enjoyed, even at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Mérida, notably the buses and taxis, are generally quite safe. They are widely used by locals and tourists alike. Buses are often crowded but are dependable and cover a wide area, while taxis are typically reasonably priced and secure, just ensure they are officially licensed. Though incidences are rare, as a solo woman traveler, it's advisable to remain vigilant, especially at night.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Mérida is regarded as one of the safer cities in Mexico and harassment tends to be on the lower side compared to other regions. Most residents tend to be respectful and polite, although, like anywhere, unwelcome attention can occur. As always, exercising common sense and taking regular precautions is advised.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Mérida is considered one of the safest cities in Mexico, known for its peaceful and comfortable ambiance, especially compared to other major cities. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching are relatively minimal with proper precautions. However, like everywhere else, travelers should still remain aware of their surroundings and be mindful of their belongings.

Is Mérida worth visiting?

Couple travel

Merida is reported as the safest city in Mexico and coming from Germany (which is usually pretty safe), merida really felt like home. Of course, you shouldn’t stay out at night by yourself and rather take an Uber than walking but when you have some sense of your surroundings you will probably feel safe. The city and people are really friendly and food is amazing.

Is the safest city in Mexico, the police is everywhere, they are very respectful and nice. The North area is the safest in the city, it is very walkable and secure. Public transportation and Uber are really secure, I have always transported with Uber for 5 years, I haven’t had any dangerous or uncomfortable experience.
