Is Delhi Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

While Delhi, the capital of India, boasts rich history and culture, the city has a reputation for high rates of harassment and crimes against women. It's important to be mindful of the surroundings, especially when traveling at night or in less crowded areas. Always arrange for pre-booked trustworthy transportation. Google 'Safety Apps for Women in India' to ensure a quick emergency response if needed. Adequate precautions are necessary but it's not entirely impossible to explore Delhi successfully. Foreign tourists are generally well respected, however, it's advisable to dress conservatively respecting the local culture.

How safe is Delhi?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Delhi, while being a richly historical and culturally fascinating city, unfortunately does not have the best track record when it comes to safety for solo female travelers at night. Walking alone late in the evening should be avoided when possible. Although there have been safety measures put in place by the Indian government like increased police patrols, particularly in tourist areas, incidents of harassment and unwanted attention are still reported. Always take reputable transport like licensed taxis, ola or uber, especially at night. Try to stay in well-lit, crowded areas and avoid quiet, isolated places after sunset. Also, dressing modestly and respecting local customs can potentially prevent unwanted attention.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

The safety of public transportation in Delhi widely varies. Metro services are generally considered quite safe and efficient. However, you may face overcrowded buses and rickshaws during peak hours, which could lead to discomfort. Taxis and auto-rickshaws provide more convenience although some drivers can take advantage of tourists by overpricing. Using transportation apps like Uber or Ola can be a safer choice. During night time, be extra cautious and try to avoid traveling alone. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:High

India, and in particular Delhi, can present challenging circumstances for solo female travelers due to the level of street harassment. While the intensity varies amongst different areas, generally, you may face cat-calling, unwelcomed comments, persistent stares, and, in some cases, physical touch. Although there are large efforts by the local authorities and NGOs to improve the situation and security measures, it's important to remain alert, dressed appropriately according to local customs, and avoid secluded places or traveling alone at night. Street harassment is not a reflection of every Indian's attitude towards women, but unfortunately, it's a part of a prevalent issue that travelers should be aware of.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:High

Delhi, is a bustling city with a mix of diverse cultures, but it has a reputation for petty crimes such as pickpocketing, purse-snatching, and scams targeted at tourists. Due to the large crowd sizes and busy nature of the city, these criminals can easily blend into crowds. Measures such as carrying your valuables close to your body, staying alert in crowded areas, and keeping an eye on your belongings can help mitigate these risks. However, credit card frauds and ATM scam cases have also been reported. Therefore, it's recommended to use credit cards only in reputable businesses and periodically check your bank statements.

All of Delhi is not safe. But, most of it is. It is infamous for being unsafe, but I have lived here most of my life and I can assure you, it's not as bad as the media makes it out to be. There are areas that I would avoid at certain times, but I often take cabs all over Delhi, alone, even at 2 am if needed, and I have not had any bad experiences. Clothing wise, its slightly restrictive compared to the Western countries, but not too bad. Again, you need to know what place will have what attire acceptable. I highly recommend making an indian friend who's from Delhi to guide you.

Areas like greater Kailash okhla and Nehru place are relatively safer. But seelampur have a few gang related activities. Since it is crowded here, during daytime,it is much safer, but need to be cautious at night
