Is Kerala Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Kerala, often referred to as 'God's Own Country', is quite safe for solo female travelers. There is a strong police presence, especially in tourist areas, and locals are often helpful and respectful. Crimes against tourists are relatively low compared to other parts of India. However, as with any location, it's always essential to exercise caution, be aware of personal belongings at all times and avoid secluded places at night.

How safe is Kerala?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Although Kerala is considered one of the safer states in India, caution should still be taken, especially during the nighttime. It's advisable to avoid isolated areas and walking alone after dark. Public transport and taxis are readily available, and using them is a safer choice when traveling at night. Always shared your taxi's information with someone you trust and check that the taxi has a working meter to avoid getting overcharged. As always, trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, steer clear and get somewhere safely with more visibility and people.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Kerala's public transportation system is generally considered safe and frequently used by locals and travelers alike. Their extensive network of buses, trains, and ferries are all maintained to good standards. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are also prevalent and largely safe, though it's recommended to use reputable taxi companies where possible. As with anywhere, vigilance with personal belongings is necessary and it's advisable to avoid travelling alone late at night.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

In Kerala, although it is one of the more progressive states in India, expect a mixed bag of experiences. It is generally safer, but instances of street harassment such as staring, whispering, or occasional cat-calling are still prevalent. However, Kerala locals are often helpful and most public places are well-monitored by authorities. Do ensure you dress modestly and avoid isolated areas especially at night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Kerala, known as 'God's own country', is generally a safe place for female solo travelers. The crime rate against tourists, particularly the petty crimes such as pickpocketing and purse snatching is relatively low as compared to other popular tourist destinations. However, it's always important to be watchful of your belongings in crowded places, and it's advisable not to carry valuable items or large amounts of cash while exploring the city. Kerala society is quite respectful towards women, but you may occasionally encounter stares or unwelcome attention, particularly in remote or less touristy areas. Always trust your instincts and take basic precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

Is Kerala worth visiting?

Family travel

I traveled in parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. it was great what a weather and air. We used public transport like bus and train mostly a few time when it was difficult to find public transport we used cab which were suprisingly very expensive.like it showed fair rate on the uber apps but when they arrived they demanded more money and if we didn't agree they left.so if you are on a budget public transport is best. In a group of 5 people from start to end including everything (food, train ticket ,bus ticket, suviner, cab, hotel stay , touring, activity etc)coasted 10 thousand indian rupees for almost 10 days if I include our departing from mumbai. Foods good basically you will get south indian food only mostly rarely paas by north indian restaurant. Eat south local food only they make it delicious don't order any other food they don't make it good unless the cook is not south indian.found a rajasthani restaurant and the full staff was Rajasthani so food was good but tried paneer paratha in random place not good

Family travel

Kerala is a nice place… people are extremely kind and courteous. However, night travel is not recommended unless you are with a group or with local guides. The land has beautiful landscapes, nature and even local diner.

Is Kerala safe for women?

Safety index

3.1 /5

Based on 3 local experiences

Crime index

1.5 /5

Based on 3 local experiences

as a North Indian woman, Kerala was a breath of fresh air. I did not have to worry about stares, unwanted attention or harassment. the cleanliness is also top notch. if you are a foreigner or a solo woman of any nationality and want to explore India, start with Kerala. it is the state with the highest literacy rate and it shows. even when I was wearing more revealing clothes and standing out from the locals who were dressed conservatively, people didn't give me any unwanted attention. (PS. don't follow my example. why take risk dressing in revealing clothes. always wear what the locals wear unless it's a private property or private beach). anyway, 10/10 experience would recommend.

Kerala can be said to be comparatively safe when we consider other states in India. People are more educated than other states in India and that do reflect in their behaviour. But not everyone is aware about the privacy and comfort of women so there can be some sort of violence. Hence should be careful as a women.
