Edmonton is a nice city. It has the river valley, which is by far my favourite aspect of Edmonton. It also has West Edmonton Mall, which is a man awesome experience when visiting as a tourist. It has a waterpark, amusement park, ice rink, arcade, movie theatre, marine centre, go-carts, bowling, casino, hotel, etc. The biggest issue with Edmonton currently is the crime, especially on public transport. During busy hours you should be fine, but drug use and homelessness is a huge problem at ETS stations, LRT train cars, and around most malls in the city.

Most areas are safe if you stay alert. I would recommend to stay away from public transit as the transit centers can be very unsafe. There are many unhoused people downtown and while they are not inherently unsafe there is a lot of drug use that happens that can cause them to react unpredictably.

I feel very comfortable walking around and exploring the surrounding areas of the city, I avoid being alone downtown too much especially at night as that's where most of the petty crime and homelessness occurs, surrounding towns and city's are very safe and welcoming eg: St Albert, Sherwood park, Spruce grove. Further from the city centre the more rural it gets but also less crime or theft. Overall I have never had anything bad happen in 15 years:)
Posted: January 3, 2026I've never had any serious safety concerns while living in Edmonton. I've been lucky that I've never had anything stolen from me. I've also never been seriously hurt while living here. I have been taking transit my whole life and know the city well by transit.
