Solo Female Travel in Pune

Pune, located in the western state of Maharashtra in India, is a dynamic blend of tradition and modernity. Famous as the cultural capital of Maharashtra, it is renowned for its rich history, magnificent palaces, serene temples, and vibrant festivals. The city is also home to several prestigious educational institutions, hence it's often called the 'Oxford of the East'. Pune is encircled with rolling hills and picturesque lakes, presenting enchanting natural beauty to its visitors. It is also the gateway to the popular hill stations of Maharashtra, like Mahabaleshwar and Lonavala. From exploring the historic Aga Khan Palace, having a family picnic at Saras Baug, to shopping at the bustling markets of Laxmi Road, Pune offers an experience worth cherishing for all types of travelers.

Safety:Safe

Pune is relatively safe for solo female travelers in comparison to several other cities in India. It has been home to a large international student population and expats, suggesting a certain degree of safety. However, like any other city, it has its own share of crime. Use basic safety precautions like avoiding isolated areas at night, not displaying expensive items, and using reliable transportation.

Transport:Easy

Pune is quite navigable with an extensive network of public transport, including buses and rickshaws, and a surge in the availability of rented bicycles for a greener option. The roads are reasonably well-developed but can get crowded during peak hours. There are also abundant ride-sharing options for further ease. The city is divided into areas that are well-marked and available in most online maps which makes it easier for travelers. Local people are generally helpful for directions. However, some knowledge of the local language can be advantageous. It's imperative to plan your day beforehand to avoid rush hours.

Things to do:Interesting

Pune is a buzzing city with a lot of activities that can pique a wide range of interests. Home to a rich blend of history and modern culture, it offers access to numerous historical sites like the Aga Khan Palace and Shaniwar Wada to satiate the history enthusiast. Nature lovers can enjoy serene spots such as the Osho Teerth Park and Khadakwasla Dam. Pune has a vibrant culinary scene offering diverse Indian cuisines, and shoppers can enjoy scouring items in the bustling markets like Fashion Street and Juna Bazaar. The traffic can be dense at times, and the city might be bustling, but the richness of experience and warmth of locals does a lot in making a solo female traveler feel welcomed and safe.

Food:Above average

Pune boasts a rich culinary scene that caters to a diverse range of food preferences. The city is a melting pot of traditional Maharashtrian food, North Indian cuisine, and international fare such as Italian, Chinese, and Continental. Street food is both delicious and readily available, complemented by plentiful vegetarian and vegan options due to the significant Jain and Buddhist populations. Equally as inviting are the various coffee shops, bakeries, and sweets shops. Despite this, the city falls shy of a perfect score due to some travelers finding the local cuisine too spicy or experiencing difficulties with street food hygiene.

Budget:Moderate

Pune is moderately budget-friendly. While it's not the cheapest destination in India, there are still numerous affordable accommodation options and inexpensive local food. Public transportation, such as buses and rickshaws, is very affordable. However, prices can increase if you prefer private transportation or high-end restaurants and hotels.

Is Pune worth visiting?

Family travel experience

We were invited to a wedding, it was really exciting. The people are great! There are a lot of stray dogs, which made me feel a bit unsafe. If you are not outside in the night alone it’s totally fine. There is great nature to check out. One time we went to a place where they farm strawberries. The food there was so delicious and with fresh strawberries. One has to get used to the way they live (sleeping on the floor, peeing into a hole on the ground) but it’s all part of the experience and that’s what makes it so rememberable and exciting. I recommend renting a car.

Okay here are some safety tops from the perspective of a local. You gorgeous, stunning and brave ladies out there Pune has got your back! * So Pune is mostly safe at night especially the areas listed down below: 1)IT areas in Hinjewadi , Baner, Wakad ( Magarpatta should be avoided after 11ish however the township is absolutely safe). 2) Residential and commercial areas in Koregaon Park, kalyani Nagar, Viman Nagar, NIBM have really pretty cafés and some cool ass clubs for those ladies nights( clubs need to be attended with atleast another person going solo should be avoided). 3) Student areas in Katraj, Kothrud and Karve Nagar are bustling througout the night and generally safe. * Central Pune, especially Peth areas should be avoided after 10

1. Pune is pretty safe for women 2. Within City Travel: Uber/Ola etc. is available to use. Otherwise Metro at selective locations is available. Swargate, Katraj Depot, Deccan Bus Stand, Kothrud Bus Stand are a few places from where you can get buses to almost everywhere. 3. Try 'Misal' at Shree Krishna Bhuvan in Tulshibaug - personal favourite and recommendation. Pretty much there's good food at every food joint. In my experience it's also easy to veganise food (given veganising it means not adding alternatives to product) 4. Try to not explore Budhwar Peth in late evening - some parts of it are red light area. Areas to explore at night are: JM Road, FC Road, Camp, MG Road, Koregaon Park, Kothrud.
