Safety:Safe

Heraklion is generally safe for solo female travelers. The area is tourist-friendly with pleasant locals. The usual safety measures should be taken, including not walking alone late at night in isolated areas and keeping personal belongings secure.

Transport:Easy

Heraklion is significantly easy to navigate. It is a well-organized city with multiple options for transportation including buses, taxis, and ports. Also, the city center in Heraklion is compact and walkable, so visiting major attractions on foot is a viable option. However, the frequency of buses can be irregular, and taxis may become scarce during peak season. Overall, the city's navigation is largely user-friendly, but minor challenges may arise. It's recommended to use a combination of public transport and walking to best experience Heraklion.

Things to do:Interesting

Heraklion, the capital of Crete, is stuffed with cultural, historical, and outdoor exploration opportunities. Historical interest is piqued by the ancient ruins of Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, offering a peak into ancient Minoan civilization. The city's fortresses, old city walls, and Venetian port also provide a glimpse into the city's diverse past. For nature and adventure, beautiful hiking trails and beaches are also easily accessible from the city. Furthermore, it is filled with atmospheric restaurants and cafes, showcasing Crete’s rich food culture. It's very safe for solo female travelers with welcoming locals. However, public transportation can be confusing at times, which might make getting around a bit challenging.

Food:Excellent

The food in Heraklion is incredibly delicious and diverse. Local delicacies, fresh seafood, colourful salads, and mouth-watering meze are plentiful. Whether you're a fanatic for Greek delicacies, a vegetarian, or someone who likes to try new and exciting dishes, you'll find something to suit your palette. The olive oil, herbs, and locally sourced ingredients add to the overall culinary experience. The vast array of food options can satisfy every foodie's dream!

Budget:Moderate

Heraklion can be considered moderately budget-friendly. While it offers cheaper options for accommodation outside the city center, the cost of food and transportation can add up. The entry fees to various historical sites and museums are also considerable. However, if you are strategic with your spending and explore local eateries, make the most of public transport, and combine attractions with combo tickets, you can keep the costs down.

Solo travel experience

Heraklion is a super cute and safe place to be! Walked everywhere but there are also some free busses you can take to go around. Otherwise, public transport is very convenient and safe. Lots to see, extra nice restaurants and everyone is extremely friendly.
