Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Heraklion is generally considered a safe destination for solo female travelers, even at night. Like any major city, there can be some areas that are less safe than others, therefore it is always important to remain aware of your surroundings. Most locals are friendly and willing to help if needed. The city center and tourist areas are well-lit and typically busy into the evening hours. However, it is always recommended to avoid poorly lit areas and stay on populated routes when walking alone at night. Stick to well-traveled streets and always let someone know where you're going if you're going out late.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Heraklion is often regarded as safe. Buses are reliable and typically in good condition, frequently used by locals and tourists alike. Service hours are also decent, although they may lessen on weekends or holidays. Drivers often speak some English, and incidents of theft, crime, or harassment specifically on public transport are relatively rare. Bus stations can be crowded, so it's always essential to be mindful of personal belongings. It's always a good idea to learn some basic Greek phrases for times when English might not be commonly spoken. Overall, using public transportation in Heraklion is reasonably safe, efficient and beneficial for solo female travelers.

Street harassment:Low

Heraklion is generally a safe city for solo female travelers. The local culture tends to be respectful and street harassment is not a widespread problem. Of course, it's always important to remain vigilant and be conscious of your surroundings, as in any urban area. But overall, instances of verbal or physical harassment are relatively rare.

Petty crimes:Low

Heraklion is generally a safe city to visit as a solo female traveler. However, as in any other tourist destinations, petty crimes such as pickpocketing or bag-snatching are not uncommon in crowded places or public transport. Local authorities have taken considerable measures to reduce these incidents, so travelers should be aware of their surroundings but do not need to be overly concerned.

Tap water:Safe

Heraklion, like many parts of Greece, has generally safe drinking tap water. Though not as pristine as bottled water, its quality adheres to the required health and safety standards. However, taste may depend on the area, and people with a particularly sensitive system may experience minor issues. It is always a good idea to stay hydrated with bottled water, especially during the hotter months.

Solo travel experience

Heraklion is a super cute and safe place to be! Walked everywhere but there are also some free busses you can take to go around. Otherwise, public transport is very convenient and safe. Lots to see, extra nice restaurants and everyone is extremely friendly.
