Zakynthos is generally a safe destination for solo female travelers. There's a low crime rate overall, with most incidents being minor, like pickpocketing. Locals are friendly and helpful towards tourists and there's a calm atmosphere in the evening. However, it's always best to apply common-sense safety measures. Avoid isolated areas late at night and always let someone know your plans.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Zakynthos, generally tends to be quite safe and reliable. Busses are the main form of public transit and are commonly used by locals and tourists alike. They are usually clean, punctual, and routes cover most of the island, making it convenient for sightseeing. However, bus schedules can sometimes be irregular, particularly during off-peak hours and the less frequented routes, so it's essential to plan your day accordingly. As with any public transportation, always be mindful of your belongings to prevent pickpocketing. Overall, the public transportation system in Zakynthos provides a secure and viable option for navigating the island.

Street harassment:Low

Zakynthos tends to be comparatively quiet when it comes to street harassment. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing or bag snatching are not very common but can occur, particularly in crowded tourist areas and on public transportation. As in any travel scenario, it is advised to stay alert, watch your belongings, and not to display valuables conspicuously.

Tap water:Safe

The tap water in Zakynthos, is generally safe for drinking. Across most parts of the island, the water is clean and follows strict water safety guidelines. However, it tends to have a slightly different taste due to the minerals it contains which some might not find palatable. Therefore, while it's fine for short-term consumption, buying bottled water may be a good idea for taste preferences.

Couple travel experience

We loved Zakynthos! The beautiful clear water and lovely little beaches. The best day was when we hired a little boat, we went to ‘shipwreck beach’ which if you’re not experienced in a boat and it’s not a very clear day then I wouldn’t say it’s worth it. That side of the island isn’t as sheltered and the bay was so full of huge tour boats creating waves and you’re no longer allowed to go on the beach itself. We stayed around the north east side of the island after that it was so much calmer and we just anchored up at loads of little secluded spots and beaches and swan in the clear water and Swam to Pelagaki beach which we loved! It has a lovely little cafe at the top of some steps and you can order food on the beach and have it sent down. The food is a very good price for on the beach and portions are very big. We hired a car while there which I think is necessary if you want to explore the island and stay out of the main towns which I would advise. We used Euro Alfa and they were very friendly, waited for us with our delayed flight and no extra add on when you arrive. Overall a lovely trip!

Group travel experience

I was there for just 2 days, but I took a full day tour round the island and it was beautiful 😍, really breathtaking and worth the trip, loved every minute, only downside was the sun, it was so freaking hot, you'd definitely need a sunglass, hat or umbrella for the Sumner trip.
