Is Greece safe for solo female travelers?

Greece is generally considered safe for solo female travelers. The locals are friendly and willing to help if needed. However, like any country, it has areas that are safer than others. The cities, such as Athens, are generally safe but require the same precautions you would take when visiting any large city. Keep your possessions close, avoid dark and secluded areas at night, and be aware of pickpockets in crowded places. The Greek islands are very safe and you can feel comfortable exploring them on your own. Greek people are known for their hospitality and many solo female travelers have pleasant experiences when visiting Greece.

Greece, Couple travel

I will definitely go back. The food is amazing. 🐙😋 the beach is sooo blue and gorgeous. I felt safe during my last 2 trips. I have done the west of Greece and planning on going to other cities every summer.

Crete, Solo travel

I went to chania in Crete for a long w-e alone. I stayed on a hostel that was 25€ the night. And was very well located. And thanks to this hostel I make friends which whôm I did a lot of activities and beach I will recommend you to do excursions. If you go in the hostel they always proposed a lot of them. The weather was very nice. And i really enjoy it

Crete, Solo travel

Had my first solo trip to Crete this august for a few nights stay. I landed in a hostel (wanted to experience that too) but I wouldn’t say it was a good rest. I liked the port side of Heraklion though, besides museums and historical sites i am not sure there was much left to see. After a 3h bus ride to Chania i finally landed to the seaside, visited the local port and lighthouse area before heading out to the camping side( another 20min bus ride). My goal was to see a falling side from a tent this summer and also se the beach. I did all here. To my surprise the camping site had great facilities (better than the hostel) and even organized a nice live music evening at their restaurant. There was a pool with bar/terrace too and all 3 sandy beaches +lidl were within a 10min walk radius which was super convenient. The 2 days i stayed there i met a great bee friend and had some good laughs and drinks by our tents. On my way back i stopped in Rethymno where i planned to visit more of the port venetian fortress but was too exhausted to carry my bags and discovered the bus station had a bag locker rental service which was great! The person there helped manage my locker and recommended a good site to go for a quick sea swim by the port which was great refresher (but a bit fishy smelly water). The restaurant close-by wasn’t welcoming, so after 6 wasted minutes i went back to the bus station, changed and had a quick snack before going back to Heraklion, this time staying at a near to the airport hotel which was great. Right across from it there was a taverna the person from hotel reception recommended and it was the best lamb chop bbq i tried and the desert from the house was yummy (raveni i think it was called) The trip i had wasn’t that great but for a last minute solo trip it was more than i expected. Hope to redo it and take more time to meet and enjoy good vibes with good people. There wasn’t much i could visit; i even googled monastery to find my steps in front of a hitel that was built over an monastery in Chania.. i walked mainly on the main streets but didn’t feel unsafe especially considering i was clearly a tourist with my backpacking on. Next time i want to take the day trip to go hiking and another trip for ferry to another island. Food was affordable, depending on the location, i spent from 3-6€ for a pastry to 23€ -30€ for a 1 person meal(plus beer/tea/ouzo included) at restaurants.

Tinos, Group travel

Tinos is a lovely island with a local vibe. It is not as overpriced as other greek islands and has its own charm. It also culturally interesting as it has it own customs. It felt quite safe as well to travel around.

Athens

It's a generally safe place with specific really problematic areas such as Metaxourgeio, Bathis, Attiki. These areas are inhibited a lot by immigrants who are not yet integrated so there are micro crimes like drug use, drug dealers and thieves. In Athens people close their magazines late so you can feel safe walking at night alongside with everyday normal people.

Sofia

Athens

It is generally safe but a small part of the city center can feel a bit shady in the night. Overall we feel safe walking in the night but you should always be cautious. It is not as safe as it feels in Dubai for example

Ermoupoli

Ermoupoli feels super safe, even late at night, you can walk through the streets and feel completely comfortable. Locals are kind and helpful if you need anything. It’s a peaceful, easygoing and beautiful historical town. Syros island is in general peaceful.

Athens

I grew up in Athens in a neighborhood near the center called Kypseli. Athens is a tourist destination so there is a lot of pickpocketing in the center (Monastiraki). There are specific neighbourhoods know for drugs (streets around Omonia) or similar staff (Metaxourgio) too. Apart from that most neighborhoods are safe, and as in most of big cities you just have to be careful at night.

Athens

The city is relatively safe, but it doesn't give you a feeling of well-being. Men constantly stare at you, but they keep their distance and, fortunately, don't talk to you. I talked to other tourists and they said that they don’t feel that safe here compared to other cities in Greece.
