Is Greece Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Greece is generally considered safe for solo female travelers. The locals are friendly and willing to help if needed. However, like any country, it has areas that are safer than others. The cities, such as Athens, are generally safe but require the same precautions you would take when visiting any large city. Keep your possessions close, avoid dark and secluded areas at night, and be aware of pickpockets in crowded places. The Greek islands are very safe and you can feel comfortable exploring them on your own. Greek people are known for their hospitality and many solo female travelers have pleasant experiences when visiting Greece.

How safe is Greece?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Greece, overall, is considered quite safe, even at night. However, the safety levels can vary depending on the area. Touristic places and city centers are typically well-lit and populated, making them relatively safe for solo female travelers even in the late hours. However, as with any destination, it's necessary to use caution and stick to populated areas. Avoid walking alone in secluded places or less-transited streets late at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Greece is generally considered quite safe. Buses and metro are run timely and usually punctual. The bigger issues seem to surround pickpocketing, particularly in crowded areas or during peak travel times. But these occurrences are relatively low and can be avoided by remaining vigilant. Remaining aware of your surroundings and belongings will help ensure a safe and pleasant travel experience.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Greece is relatively safe with respect to street harassment. Locals are generally respectful and warm towards tourists. While occasional staring or unwanted attention may be experienced, especially in crowded tourist areas, it is not pervasive or aggressive. However, as always, it's recommended to maintain your situational awareness and adopt culturally appropriate behaviours.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

While Greece generally maintains a low-profile in terms of petty crimes such as pick-pocketing and bag snatching, you still need to remain vigilant. Especially in larger cities and crowded tourist areas, it can occur, primarily driven by the economic challenges the country has faced. However, with common-sense precautions like keeping your belongings close, not showcasing expensive items, and avoiding secluded areas at night, the risk can be considerably lessened.

Thessaloniki, Group travel

I felt safe, I spent under 25 euros a day. Food was amazing. I went with tour so my experience was limited yet I highly recommend. Every person I've encountered seems to understand english. It is refreshing walking in the Aristoteles square and trying greek pastries thereby.

Athens, Group travel

Athens is a beautiful place, a must visit in my opinion if you are even slightly interested in Ancient Culture or Western History. The museums are exceptional, I've felt very connected to humanity in this trip. I would recommend to stay in the central neighbourhoods, although they are more expensive and full of tourists, I only felt safe where we stayed because we were a very large group. This city is beautiful and people are amazingly nice, but the truth is that many places are completely abandoned and there is a lot of poverty, even children asking for money.

Thessaloniki, Family travel

Thessaloniki is such a beautiful city. The people are so nice and helpful, very social compared to where I come from. There is a lot of catcalling unfortunately, men of all age shouting and whistling, we were approached a few times too but it was handled with a simple story of telling that we're traveling with a man:’) I definitely recommend visiting Halkidiki; rent a car or take the bus! Also Ano Poli is worth it, the cafes and general vibe there made me want to stay there forever. There are a lot of places to eat at, I suggest just walking around and sitting down somewhere that looks good! I spent about 200€ during the 4 days there—that went to food, snacks and transportation. We stayed at an AirBnB which cost about 150€ for 4 nights, it was at a lovely location and easy to get to. If anyone wants our itinerary, just ask! I made a detailed schedule <3

Chania

Chania is overall a safe city in Chania and in comparison to Athens is much much safer when it comes to mugging. Women should be cautious anyway when it comes to sexual harassment. Incidents have taken place in the city and nobody should be blindly trusted even if the overall atmosphere is welcoming and warm. As in every country and city around the word, kindness could be just a mask.

Chania

I felt really safe even after dark. Men are usually mostly tourists that seem to be respectful. They dont approach you out of nowhere, and they barely try anything which was awesome and made my trip super chill.
