The city center and the east suburbs are safe even late at night The west side of the city especially near and after the train station is not safe at all. It's possible to get robbed, scared or rarely harassed. Overall during the day it's a safe city but at night a +1 person is super good to have.
Posted: April 24, 2025I have lived in Thessaloniki for several years now and I consider it a fairly safe city even while walking at night. That said, caution is always a good idea (keeping to busier streets, not flawnting money etc, and avoiding shady areas). Shady areas are considered places mostly west of the city center, especially near the train station (definitely avoid walking there at night). If you decide to join one of the events at the university campus at night, keep in mind it has also had a few unsavory happenings because of the dark spots and zero security, so make sure to go with friends. Like in a lot of European cities the most common issue is pickpocketers, so keep that in mind especially in packed buses.

It’s all about where you are going. There are places very safe and others you must not go!! Most of us we usually walk at night with someone else or with car or taxi! At the centre of the town you can do a lot without fear!
Posted: April 21, 2025During daytime, central and East parts of Thessaloniki are fairly safe. Police presence is adequate on most days, but corruption on a national level renders their actions ambiguous. I personally find myself sticking to central and East locations, in places with a good amount of buildings and people.
Posted: April 21, 2025I and my close friends/family have personally never been attacked before in Athens. Only cases I have heard of are teenagers/young adults who threaten people to give them their phones/money but I consider it rare + not a matter of area and can happen anywhere you go. Dark and narrow alleys are to be avoided like in every city, although once again I haven't even encountered someone who poses a threat to me. Still, as I am a woman, I do feel unsafe walking alone in the night etc. I think Athens is in overall safe, with some not tourist-popular suburbs like Metaxourgeio and Menidi being more at risk due to cases of drug abuse or pick pocketing observed in there. To the girls that visit, I would just recommend: Do what you usually do and avoid the neighborhoods with a bad fame. Better safe than sorry!
Posted: April 18, 2025Very safe!!! A closed family city..Crime is rare, it happens but only sporadically. Good for families with kids or solo women travelling. Nice sightseeing places, kind people. Beauty welcoming Locals

Generally it's safe - most bars and clubs stay open until morning and in the popular areas it's full of people all day and night. The thing to be cautious about is pickpockets, especially in public transport.
Posted: April 17, 2025It's overall safe during the daylight but after 9pm I would advice to not wander alone and in darker spots in the city, definitely be aware of your surroundings because there's risk of bumping into drunken people or junkies but also very common is drivers being irresponsible.
Posted: April 14, 2025Athens can be safe in some areas, but places like Ominia and all around the Omonia are very dangerous. You shouldn't go alone there. Syntagma and some popular areas are very crowded places, so sometimes people can steal stuff from you, so you gotta be careful.
Posted: April 13, 2025It’s okay. I’ve heard about houses being broken into or people getting assaulted in the streets. My neighbourhood is fine so thats why I feel kinda safe. I’m still a woman though so I’m not sure if I’ll ever feel 100% safe.

I felt great, there was no threat (I was with my family). We stayed at Calypso Studios, I can’t recommend it enough!!! We go there every summer and the prices are great, the staff and the owners are just amazing❤️ I’ve tested the coffee shops around my hotel, there are a lot of activities on the sea shore and the beaches are marvelous. I went on walks at dawn and I felt safe, never had any unpleasant experiences. It’s a small village with kind people 🥰
Posted: April 24, 2025Last month I travelled to Athens, this was my first experience as a solo traveller. I felt safe throughout the whole trip, most people were really nice and willing to help a tourist out! The hotel was moderately cheap, although I booked during a low peak season, thus prices may be higher in other months. I loved this experience, and hope i can organise another trip soon!
