Athens is safe generally depending on the area you’re in. You do hear a lot of instances and scary stories that happen here so I make sure to always be cautious wherever I am and be aware of my surroundings. You do get a few comments here and there that you have to ignore.

Not the safest city from Europe but overall it’s ok. Avoid walking alone in the night. Be aware of the immigrants, some sleep on the streets, but that is a basic issue of Greece. Greek people are warm and kind, very friendly. Athens is more dangerous than Thessaloniki.

It's a touristic place so there are some pickpockets but I find it mostly safe. I feel safe in the center and it's really beautiful. It might be best to avoid going alone to omonia and exarchia alone at night. The public transport is clean and safe.
Posted: May 4, 2025Greece is mostly safe, but like anywhere, it has its issues. In cities like Athens, petty crime like pickpocketing is common in tourist spots and on public transport. Some areas feel rougher at night, especially around Omonia or Exarchia. Protests happen fairly often and can get tense, but locals usually know when to steer clear. Outside the cities, in towns or islands, life feels much calmer and safer. Overall, it's not perfect, but many people live here without major safety concerns.
Posted: May 1, 2025Depending on the area of Athens, it's moderately safe. Going out alone at night is not really safe in the more central areas like omonoia and victoria but it is generally safe in the suburbs like in Marousi or Kifisia. That being said, us girls should walk with caution and best to be on call with someone when walking alone after dark.
Posted: April 30, 2025It is a safe town, the place where I live there are a lot of nice people that know me and keep their eyes on me because they want to protect me but there are some things that have happened lately that make me feel a little bit scared. There are some people that do drugs and walk around and people don’t feel safe around them
Posted: April 28, 2025Generally, it is a safe town. It's full of students as there are 2 big universities in the city. There are some areas that it's better to avoid going alone in the night but are not in the city center and it's very obvious when you are near that it's better not o go closer

Overall safe place, of course some areas are quite sketchy, especially at night. City center is mostly safe as well, pickpocketing is not so common. Still as a female I would be cautious walking alone at night.

The city center and the east suburbs are safe even late at night The west side of the city especially near and after the train station is not safe at all. It's possible to get robbed, scared or rarely harassed. Overall during the day it's a safe city but at night a +1 person is super good to have.
Posted: April 24, 2025I have lived in Thessaloniki for several years now and I consider it a fairly safe city even while walking at night. That said, caution is always a good idea (keeping to busier streets, not flawnting money etc, and avoiding shady areas). Shady areas are considered places mostly west of the city center, especially near the train station (definitely avoid walking there at night). If you decide to join one of the events at the university campus at night, keep in mind it has also had a few unsavory happenings because of the dark spots and zero security, so make sure to go with friends. Like in a lot of European cities the most common issue is pickpocketers, so keep that in mind especially in packed buses.
