Is Genoa Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Genoa is generally safe for solo female travelers. While the city is relatively friendly, it's still recommended to keep an eye on your belongings as petty theft can occur, particularly in crowded areas and public transportation. Always be cautious, especially when walking alone at night in less crowded areas. However, people are often helpful and respectful, making it a great destination for solo travel.

How safe is Genoa?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Genoa is generally considered a safe city for solo female travelers even at night. Like most cities though, it possesses certain areas that are more secure than others. The main tourist areas, such as the historic center, waterfront, and major shopping marts are well lit and regularly patrolled. Even so, it is advisable to remain vigilant, particularly at night or when streets are less crowded, to avoid any potential dangers. Practicing common safety precautions, like not displaying valuable items openly and using reliable transportation services, can further enhance your safety.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Genoa, is generally safe and efficient. Busses, trains, and metro are quite reliable and easy to navigate, even for non-Italian speakers with accessible information and signs. However, like any other city, minor incidents like pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded places. Being aware of your belongings can help avoid any mishaps.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Genoa, like much of Italy, has a relatively low level of street harassment compared to other major cities globally. Most of the locals are respectful and polite, although some catcalling might occur during the night. It is always advisable to take the usual precautions, such as avoiding deserted or less tourist-friendly areas at night, and to not respond to any sort of harassment.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Genoa is generally considered to not be a high-risk area for petty crimes. The locals are much welcoming, and police have a strong presence and laden the streets to ensure the safety of both locals and tourists. Nonetheless, basic precautions should be taken. You should always keep an eye on your belongings, avoid showing expensive possessions in public and avoid certain areas at night. Instances of pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded places like public transport and tourist spots, but these are highly sporadic. All in all, the prevalence of petty crime is comparatively minimal in Genoa.

genova is a beautiful city that gives the opportunity to see many things and get in touch with many realities. Even turning in the evening I felt safe :) I recommend a tour of the old town, expecially via del campo and the museum dedicate to fabrizio de andré

Genova is a beautiful and historical city in Liguria, it’s very famous for the little streets and it was amazing seeing this in person. There are many beaches and the sea around it, which are super beautiful. It was amazing, btw the food is incredibly good, I recommend the ravioli house for nice ravioli pasta 🇮🇹❤️

The good in Genoa was, just as somewhere else I have been in Italy so far, perfect. Great Seafood and Pasta, good Wine and delicious Gelato. Prices where a little bit higher than expected, but for the quality of the food it was totally fine. I took the train to La Spezia and visited Cinque Terre with a boat, which I can highly recommend to everyone who wants to enjoy also some "slower" travel days than you have in Genoa, where it can be very loud and stressful. However it was a great backpacking trip and I would visit Geno again.

Genova is not an unsafe city to live, but men exist also here and not all of them are people I’d want to be around. I experienxe catcalling almost everyday but it always end there, there are definetely not many cases of women getting raped in Genova. On a scale 1-10 I would say that Genova is 7/10 safe (especially compared with some other italian cities).

Genova is a safe town (even if it's still a town : you still have to be carefull). There are a lot of old people (in public transportation for example) which make the city even more safe. Just a small recommandation : don't go to the street Via di pré, it's not safe.
