Speaking anecdotally and from personal opinion, without statistical knowledge, I would say it’s as safe as an average city in America, maybe even safer. I go on walks late at night often, and while I am cautious and alert, I have never faced problems.
Posted: July 22, 2025Being born and raised in Tucson has taught me how to be on guard 24/7. I always thought outsiders' concerns about Tucson being unsafe were overblown. I have never been a victim of violent crime by strangers. I have been assaulted by someone I know (which is the most common form of assault). I have been catcalled and sexually harassed, especially when I was a college student walking around at night. I get left alone now that I'm older. I had my childhood home broken into and a relative's car was stolen, but nothing has happened to me since I moved out. Tucson has a huge housing crisis and people often have fear of the homeless on the street. In my experience, most of them are lovely people down on their luck. It's just the fear of the other. Although to be fair, there have been news stories of people getting attacked at bus stops. When I travel other places in the world, I do not see as many unhoused people on the streets as I do here. It can be jarring for travelers. Keep your wits about you, don't put yourself in dangerous situations, but you are unlikely to get attacked. You are likely safer walking after dark vs walking in the day time just because the heat is deadly. Take someone with you, especially a male friend, if possible. Walk like you know where you're going and what you're doing. Most people here are kind, however. Don't be afraid to have conversations with strangers you see in shops and cafes etc.
Posted: July 14, 2025Tucson is pretty safe based on my experiences and resident here for a long time now. There are areas of thcson that are more sketchy and unsafe compared to other parts of the city but it's not super bad. Mostly just the city looking like trash and homeless people everywhere. It feels unsafe but I have never had anything happen to me wheel walking in those areas or taking the bus.
Posted: June 4, 2025Very safe during the day, but certain areas can feel a bit unsafe at night. The Sunlink, the downtown train is free safe and easy to use, but other buses don’t feel as safe. Locals have told be about issues with break-ins.
