Being born and raised in Tucson has taught me how to be on guard 24/7. I always thought outsiders' concerns about Tucson being unsafe were overblown. I have never been a victim of violent crime by strangers. I have been assaulted by someone I know (which is the most common form of assault). I have been catcalled and sexually harassed, especially when I was a college student walking around at night. I get left alone now that I'm older. I had my childhood home broken into and a relative's car was stolen, but nothing has happened to me since I moved out. Tucson has a huge housing crisis and people often have fear of the homeless on the street. In my experience, most of them are lovely people down on their luck. It's just the fear of the other. Although to be fair, there have been news stories of people getting attacked at bus stops. When I travel other places in the world, I do not see as many unhoused people on the streets as I do here. It can be jarring for travelers. Keep your wits about you, don't put yourself in dangerous situations, but you are unlikely to get attacked. You are likely safer walking after dark vs walking in the day time just because the heat is deadly. Take someone with you, especially a male friend, if possible. Walk like you know where you're going and what you're doing. Most people here are kind, however. Don't be afraid to have conversations with strangers you see in shops and cafes etc.

Cincinnati and the many surrounding little cities are very safe in most places. There’s been an uptick in violent crime recently but it’s all been very targeted and doesn’t really worry me. It’s very safe to walk any of the downtown areas, and there are many with close to a dozen small cities bordering Cincinnati. Even after dark there are only a couple of places I wouldn’t walk alone, and they are limited to ten or fewer square blocks
Posted: July 14, 2025Overall if you keep situational awareness in Las Vegas you’re fine. If you’re on the strip be aware of pig pockets and people trying to scam you out of money. Physical assault is pretty rare, just don’t get out of control, never leave your drink unattended… Use your head

Regarding major cities, like New York, Houston, Atlanta.. there is safety in numbers. I feel safest when I’m in the busy areas, and things can feel sketchy when you go into less busy neighborhoods . I would not ride the trains too late at night, like 10:30pm or later if you are going to a less busy area (for example riding the trains late in Manhattan is okay because there’s usually a lot of people still, but riding the trains in Brooklyn it’s very isolated). For NYC, at night you can ride in the train cars that have the conductor. The US does not address its homeless and mental health problems, so most major cities will have concentrated areas of homeless people, in my experience MOST are harmless, but with mental health issues some can be aggressive (especially in NYC). If you’re not in a major city, then you’ll most likely have to drive/rent a car to get around, we do not have a lot public transport. In this case you will be pretty safe, but try to know basic car maintenance and have basic tools in case there are any issues with your vehicle. For example, know how to change a tire, and call for roadside assistance if not. Ideally make sure you have a flashlight or headlamp.
Posted: July 13, 2025Raleigh is generally safe, there are just a few sketchy people hanging about the downtown area, but it’s what you would expect in a city. That being said it’s very pretty and i’ve never had an issue there.
Posted: July 11, 2025Philadelphia, overall, is moderately safe; but it really depends on the neighborhood. I'm not certain that most residential neighborhoods where tourists would frequent. Even areas occupied by AirBnB locations, are fairly safe. However, with all of that said, I wouldn't travel alone in most areas after dark unless you are very familiar. In the event the police need to be called for domestic disturbances, response times can vary greatly. Sometimes, I've personally had to call multiple times and experienced long wait times for an officer to respond for things ranging from hit and run and noise from domestic disputes.

The park itself is absolutely gorgeous. If you like geology, it's a must-see. Petrified trees are fascinating. The trees here died before the Jurassic period (from my recollection) and sank into ancient riverbeds that are now long gone before fossilizing and turning to quartz. It's surreal and like walking through the past. There are petroglyphs as well... I'm a cheap traveler, so I camped in my van at the gift shop right outside the park, as is allowed by the business. Since I have an access pass, I can visit all national parks for free. Otherwise, you pay what I believe to be a reasonable fee to enter for the day. There are dispersed campsites you can backpack to, but you need a permit, which can be obtained at the welcome center. Plenty of bathrooms and places to fill up with water.
