Waikiki during the day and night (before 11pm) are usually safe. Shops close around 10/11pm and the traffic declines. Stay clear of alleyways during the night. Kalakaua Ave is usually more lit up than Kuhio Ave, so I’d rather walk there.

It’s a very small town on a very small island. There are parts that have more “crime” than others, but it’s mostly petty crimes and theft because of the extreme poverty. Hawaii is a very expensive place to live and the wages here are not equal to the cost of living. That is the only reason I stay alert, as women always should, but I walk around alone and travel alone and this is by far one of the safest cities in the USA.

Very safe area, especially where tourists stay. There are always police around to ensure safety. Homeless people aren’t very aggressive, so they just exist and sleep on sidewalks. They are grateful for any food you could provide.
Posted: August 14, 2024It depends on the area that you are in, but overall it’s a pretty safe place to be. Of course, be mindful of your surroundings and don’t leave any valuables any out in the open (e.g.: on the seat of your car, on top of all of your stuff at the beach).

I felt very safe in Honolulu! I was with my partner but either way I would feel completely safe solo travelling. We walked around early in the morning and late at night, and stayed slightly off the beaten path. A fair amount of homeless people in some spots, but they did not approach me. We took a bus to diamond head and it was completely reliable and safe.
Posted: April 5, 2024Honolulu is amazing. I traveled there by myself, rented a car for a few days, drove around the island, climbed Diamond Head, participated in a Luau, went to Hanauma Bay, swam with sharks on the North Shore, visited Waimea Valley, went to a coffee and macadamia nut plantation, swam in the ocean, saw sea turtles. It all felt like paradise.

Hi there! I am a TV reporter and current traveling journalist working my way around the world. Currently just made a spontaneous move to Hawaii. I’m a huge mermaid, love the beach and scuba dive, snorkel and free dive. Also love nature, hikes, wildlife, adventuring, trying anything once and dancing up a storm. As a TV reporter I have a lot of photography experience and love taking pictures and videos. I enjoy meeting and getting to know locals and local parts of town when I travel. I love animals and offer pet sitting and dog sitting for a place to stay when traveling!

I’m a teacher and I’m getting ready for my first solo trip to Australia. Then I’ll travel for 6 months around New Zealand and SE Asia.
