Being a larger city, Atlanta has its fair share of crime and violence. By no means should someone avoid Atlanta, but certain safety measures are always good to have. Personally, as a woman who has grown up here, I recommend always carrying mace. I have never had to use it, but it provides a sense of safety when venturing into more shady areas of town. The men here can sometimes be annoying when it comes to catcalling, but they tend to keep their hands to themselves.
Posted: January 4, 2025My neighborhood of Midtown Arts Center is very clean and somewhat upscale. The further down you get into the city the more questionable it gets though. I wouldn’t dare walk alone at Piedmont Park at night or be in Downtown ATL too long at night by myself though!

As long as you know the area you are in it’s pretty safe. I would definitely have contacts here or travel with other people but if not, if you are careful it should be okay. No more dangerous than other cities in the US and worth the trip if you are interested.

I had just spent three months in Atlanta but Thank God I had no problems about safety in Atlanta so far. And I don’t know about any bad experience of someone else here, even most of my friends are girls

As in all cities, it depends on the circumstances. The central and touristy parts of Atlanta are lovely. Be careful around outskirts and deserted areas, they are typically more unsafe after dark. I have never experienced more than occasional catcalls or men staring at me as I pass them. Stay aware and you will be fine.
Posted: September 17, 2024Atlanta is a moderately safe city, especially depending on neighborhoods. I generally don’t feel safe walking around at night alone anywhere but would feel most safe to walk at night in neighborhoods like Cabbagetown, Reynoldstown, Lake Claire, and Kirkwood. I stopped going to straight bars and clubs in generally because I’m gay but I also witnessed lots of friends in my twenties get ruphied. Even at gay bars I’ve experienced sketchy times and people but the safest and most fun night life I enjoy are Second Fridays: a lesbian pop up monthly dance party. No matter the venue I generally feel safe because I know the people who run it and have always had a feeling of safety there, even going out alone!

Areas to Avoid: - Downtown (do not go to downtown area unless you are going to the tourist places. This area can be dangerous! Do not book hotels in this area.) - Five Points - Mechanicsville Areas that are good to stay in: - Buckhead -Sandy Springs - Old Fourth Ward - Midtown *** (where I live and the safest!)
Posted: August 16, 2024Atlanta is relatively safe. Like all cities, there are petty crimes and you hear a lot of gun shots but I've never had any issues in my 10 years living in the city. People on public transportation can be sketchy and there are many homeless but they're aren't typically a concern.
Posted: July 24, 2024Choose the neighborhood that feels safe to you. Inside the perimeter, I chose buckhead, north druid hills, Brookhaven, west midtown. More concerned about scammers than physical harm. I've never experienced serious harm here in 9 years outside of harassment from men, which is everywhere.
Posted: July 7, 2024Atlanta is not very safe for woman after it gets dark. It is safe in Midtown, but Downtown gets very sketchy at night. Make sure you carry pepper spray and never go out alone if you can help it. The police are very good though.

Day trip to ATL - Atlanta, GA Visited the Delta Flight museum. Rented car for transport. Took the Tuesday 1 PM tour that was hosted by retired Delta employees who talked about the objects and planes in the museum and their experiences. It was entertaining and educational especially to those who love aviation and history. Good for solo travel due to secure environment of airport and museum. You have to show ID to access the museum since it is on their corporate campus adjacent to the airport. Also enjoyed the tour which was a group of about 15 other friendly people. Only sketchy part was leaving the airport. There were people begging near the Marta station but they left you alone if ignored.
Posted: February 5, 2024I've been to Atlanta many times. I've used the trains and walked around different kinds of neighborhoods. My only problem with Atlanta is that it's crowded. Besides that, I'm not a fan of southern food after a day or two because it's very unhealthy. But besides that, Atlanta is a cool city to visit. Lots of fun neighborhoods - downtown, midtown, northern part, and Buckhead. All are amazing.

I am a student in Florida, US traveling in between semesters and in breaks. I love destinations where I can be active and see a lot in a short period of time :)

Hola, Bonjour, Hello! I’m an explorer at heart and love getting to know new cultures, especially through meeting locals, learning of their history, and food. I grew up in the Dominican Republic and have lived in 10 cities in North America. I’m in Atlanta now but have lived in Toronto, NYC, and Denver to name a few popular places. Happy to give recommendations, or possibly host someone. Must love dogs though! I have 2 at home that would be there. I look forward to meeting fellow travelers.
