How safe is Silver Spring?

The part of Silver Spring that I live in feels like a quiet and safe neighborhood. I have lived here for 5 years, and the only crimes in the area are just the occasional car break-in. Downtown feels safe walking alone at night. I haven't experienced any harassment or threats of any kind. It's a nice place to walk around on a summer night.
