Honestly, for the most part San Jose is not dangerous. There are some parts of East San Jose that I personally would not walk alone in. However, what San Jose does have are a lot of homeless people who sometimes are walking around and are on drugs. They usually don’t mess with you, but always stay cautious!
Posted: January 18, 2025San Jose is pretty safe. Obviously the nicer areas are very safe, and the less nice areas are decently unsafe. In general, I would not recommend walking alone after dark or using public transport after dark. There are some super cute and super safe spots!
Posted: January 10, 2025It is pretty safe for the most part. I always share my location with a family member. I do not stay out late at night either. The homeless people will for the most part stay to themselves. That is mostly the downtown area.
Posted: May 26, 2024San Jose is relatively safe overall, but there are certain places where one should be cautious, especially at night. Mainly Downtown San Jose area. It's okay if you're with others, but I'd personally not walk around there alone (it's mostly bars anyway).

Hey! Love that we’re all here doing this. I’m California born, raised in Wales, now back in San Jose. I love cherry blossoms and riding public transport, having conversations and sitting at the same cafe table all day, finding cold water to swim in on hikes, going to the local capoeira group, learning languages and writing poems, cooking from what’s in the cupboard and identifying roadside weeds, among other things. I’m currently without a vehicle and not living in my own home, otherwise I’d love to host you and give you lifts! I take being a guest seriously.
