San Diego is a big city where there’s always events going on so there’s always something to do. I would feel less safe alone in downtown given the homeless population there. Public transport is reliable
Posted: November 23, 2024San Diego is a big place and so safety definitely varies depending on where you are. The main tourist areas near the ocean and along the waterfront downtown are generally pretty safe. During the day, I feel fine doing things alone. Uber/Lyft are plenty and public transport is there, but slow and sparse. Use basic travel smarts (lock your car, keep valuables stowed where people can't see them, keep your phone charged should you need to look up alternative routes/plans for getting around).

It is very safe, just avoid the areas that have large homeless populations. If you stick to touristy areas like La Jolla and Little Italy, you will be very safe and secure. Public transportation may sometimes be less safe.

When I walk at night, I do feel safer when I’m with my large dog. My neighborhood (North Park) has a lot of homeless people, and they’re not always in their right minds. So it’s a little scary, even though I’ve never been attacked or heard of anyone getting attacked. People do steal packages that have been delivered.
Posted: July 12, 2024San Diego is very safe for travelers from all over the world. We do have a minor (relative to 3rd world countries) homeless problem so you may encounter some unsafe feeling characters if walking around alone at night, especially downtown, but they are generally harmless. Stay closer to the beach areas and you won’t experience this as much.
Posted: April 28, 2024I feel safe walking by myself in most areas all throughout San Diego - just remain vigilant. Certain areas (especially in downtown) can have a lot of homeless population. Most of the homeless population are harmless and keep to themselves, but there are some who may exhibit erratic behavior.

As a woman living in San Diego, I generally feel safe. The bustling neighborhoods and well-lit streets in areas like La Jolla and Coronado give me confidence. I stay cautious at night and stick to familiar areas, but overall, the sense of community and active lifestyle here contribute to my feeling of security.
Posted: February 28, 2024Keep your wits about you for sure. There are a lot of homes people who are ex military and mentally unstable so they’re a bit unpredictable. Also San Diego is close to the Mexican border so be careful about trafficking.

I had a great time visiting the old town area. Lots of free museums and markets to check out and close to public transit. There was a lot of mexican souvenir shops and artisans, as well as niche shops including a mineral/gem store.
Posted: June 29, 2024The beaches, parks, San Diego Zoo, and art museum, were all incredible! So was Coronado Island, where we rented bikes to see the sights. Great, reasonably priced food is everywhere, as long as you know how to look. We used a rental car to get around town, and were able to drive around downtown during Comic Con. A truly incredible experience, so glad I got to spend it with my sister and father!
