Overall pretty safe if you walk in the well populated areas. Still prefer to walk with other people at night instead of alone. Crime can be a problem, but not excessive. It’s not bad in the college area of the city.

Richmond is a safe city by and large. With any city - Richmond included - it’s a good idea to be aware and alert within downtown areas. But I have walked home alone many times with no issue, and felt very safe in every neighborhood I’ve been to.
Posted: October 24, 2024Relatively safe but some areas can be sketchy at night. Jackson Ward and Downtown have some alleys and side streets that are not well lit. Be sure to carry pepper spray and be aware of your surroundings!
Posted: July 10, 2024Richmond is a safe city. You can walk alone but on the other hand if you have a car you shouldn’t put anything in car. Richmond is safe than downtown so you can stay. You wanna ask something i can answer
Posted: July 4, 2024I have lived in Richmond for about 8 months. And I really like it here. Walking around is really nice. There's nature close by easily accessible public parks and a lot of art. It's like a small town but it's a city. The only area that I have any reservations about is Broad street. On Friday nights it's really fun. The stores open up and have a lot of music and culture but there is sometimes some sketchy stuff that goes down. other than that, I absolutely love the city and plan on staying here for a long time.

Downtown, East End, and South Richmond shouldn’t be travelled through alone on foot at night, and you should exercise caution while alone on foot during the day. VCU Monroe Park area (before the Fan) can be a little ify too if you aren’t cautious. Definitely don’t leave car doors unlocked around that area.
Posted: June 5, 2024Richmond, like most cities has its parts to avoid. Use precautions when walking around at night, and stay in areas like the Fan or Museum District that are often more residential and safer. The more urban parts of Richmond can have more crime, as expected.
