There are definitely parts of Indy that are objectively unsafe given high gun violence and drug activity. Staying in the downtown metro area is best way to avoid these neighborhoods on the east and west sides of town. Being mindful of your surroundings is the only advice needed to stay safe as with any city.
Posted: April 4, 2025I have no personal experience with public transport and have only walked around once (very new to the city), but i was briefly followed. Catcalling is very common. I would not go out at night. However, during the day it is fairly safe.

Decently safe but not great for women being alone in my opinion. This seems to be consistent in every city area I’ve travelled to. Mostly just feels unsafe after dark if you’re in an area thats less populated.

Most of the people who say it’s unsafe are fearmongering. Most areas are quite safe unless you’re trying to get into trouble. I’ve spent a lot of time in the “bad” neighborhoods for work and have never felt unsafe. You may get catcalled in the downtown or Broad Ripple areas. Idk about public transit, don’t use it much.
Posted: July 7, 2024during the day indianapolis can be safe because a lot of people here are active. many people exercise outside by themselves or in groups through walking, running, or riding their bikes. i just don’t feel the same sense of security at night. some neighborhoods don’t have much street lighting as well. so i don’t recommend being alone at night.
Posted: June 13, 2024Use common sense and don’t walk around downtown alone. I typically have a friend walk me to my car and use high vigilance when alone. I have never personally been attacked, but I have had friends mugged at gunpoint in the downtown areas. Do not use public transport - ubers and lyfts are great if you don’t have a car.

I feel very safe during the day and people on the street are very helpful. There are certain areas to stay away from (outskirts of downtown) at night. I only usually worry about someone breaking into my car or making a weird comment, not physically harming me.

I’m a student in Indiana but I grew up in New York. At school, I study engineering and I love all kinds of science. I consider myself an introvert but I love to travel and would like to meet new people abroad!

Hi, I’m MJ. I’m happiest when I’m on the go. Whether on a leisure walk through the woods or sticking to a packed itinerary in a far away place. I love to plan my travels about 75% and leave 25% up to spontaneity. A big challenge I face when traveling with others is finding someone who’s willing to travel mindfully and respect my vegan lifestyle. I’m a big advocate for reusable containers, avoiding excessive shopping, and supporting vegan eateries whenever possible. Happy to connect with those that are willing to get lots of steps in and support responsible travel practices!🌱✨🌐
