How safe is Honolulu?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Honolulu is generally known for its safe environment. As a solo female traveler, you will usually find that the main tourist areas are well lit and populated until late hours. Nevertheless, like in any major city, it’s wise to maintain your situational awareness. Stick to public, well-lit areas, avoid areas where there are not many people around, and always be aware of your personal belongings. It can help to plan your route before you leave for the evening and stick to it. Overall, careful planning and common sense can go a long way in ensuring your safety at night for a pleasant experience in Honolulu.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Honolulu, particularly TheBus system, is generally safe and reliable. It covers most of the island and stations are well-lit and often populated. Passengers include everyone from school children to business professionals, signifying a trustworthy system. However, like any public transportation, it's advised to stay alert and aware of your surroundings, especially during late-night hours.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Honolulu, headquartered on the island of Oahu, is known for being generally safe and respectful towards women. Most citizens have the aloha attitude, thus, the cases of street harassment are relatively low. However, like in any city, there may be isolated incidents, especially in less crowded or lower income areas. It's always recommended to take common safety precautions like avoiding lonely streets at night, and remaining vigilant about your surroundings.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Honolulu tends to be relatively safe in terms of petty crimes compared to other major U.S. cities. The most reported incidents usually involve theft, particularly pickpocketing in tourist-heavy areas and break-ins in parked cars. Therefore, it's advised to not leave your belongings visible in parked cars and always be mindful of your personal possessions while around the city. However, violent crime is low, and most areas are safe to walk during both day and night.

Solo travel

Honolulu was a really busy place, it as pretty expensive and a bit lonely for a solo trip. I think being on my own wasn’t maybe the best as a lot of men would come up to me on the street and ask me out. At first it seemed ok but it really wasn’t and I realised that the American culture is kinda superficial so everyone seems really nice at first but it was not very safe. During the day it felt very safe but at night it was not great walking alone, I found it hard to make friends with other women here but very easy to find men who wanted to date, it was honestly a bit much sometimes and I often felt like it was unsafe to say no. An a non-American it took me a bit of time to realise what the culture was around this, I didn’t love it.

Couple travel

I felt very safe in Honolulu! I was with my partner but either way I would feel completely safe solo travelling. We walked around early in the morning and late at night, and stayed slightly off the beaten path. A fair amount of homeless people in some spots, but they did not approach me. We took a bus to diamond head and it was completely reliable and safe.

Solo travel

Honolulu is amazing. I traveled there by myself, rented a car for a few days, drove around the island, climbed Diamond Head, participated in a Luau, went to Hanauma Bay, swam with sharks on the North Shore, visited Waimea Valley, went to a coffee and macadamia nut plantation, swam in the ocean, saw sea turtles. It all felt like paradise.

Absolutely loved my time here the people were so welcoming and friendly. I worked at a bar / club for a few weeks as they have a high turnover rate bc of the travelers that frequent Hawaii. It’s got tons of delicious food and beautiful beaches, amazing hikes and the weather was perfect.

Climbing Diamond Head is one of my must-do items when I'm in Oahu. Visiting Pearl Harbor and the Iolani Palace is worthwhile due to their historical significance (they can be quite emotional experiences). The Foster Botanical Garden is beautiful, and I highly recommend the Bishop Museum. Waikiki Beach is cool to visit, but Lanikai Beach is prettier. A few notes: - All the beaches I visited have public restrooms, but none of them had soap any time I was there, so if you're going, bring your own hand sanitizer. - Sunscreen must be reef-safe.

My recommendations: Lanikai and Kailua beaches are beautiful, while Polo Beach is a nudist beach. For free snorkeling, check out Electric Beach and Shark's Cove. Go hiking on Koko Head, preferably in the morning, as it gets hot in the afternoon and there is no shade on the trail. If you're an adrenaline junkie, you may want to try the three peaks, but beware - the third peak is the most dangerous and tragedies have occurred there, so I do not recommend this route. Take surfing lessons! Free shark diving tours are available, which means you will be in the water with sharks without a cage. In the north, there's the opportunity to skydive. As for food, there are great food trucks in the north, and the shrimp at Giovanni's is the best.

I highly recommend renting a car. Download the Shaka app and drive. The views are breathtaking. If you want to climb Diamond Head, reservations are required. Another easier trail with beautiful views is the trail to the Makapuu lighthouse. Tickets are required for the Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor. I recommend eating at Haleiwa Joes in Kanehoe. The views are spectacular, and the food was one of our best meals. Dukes on Waikiki was the second. Both restaurants are a must-visit. We took the Jurassic Movie Tour on the Kualoa Ranch. It has the most stops at movie locations. Fantastic if you are a movie fan. Over 50 movies were filmed there. Leonard's malasadas are excellent. Another dish that you must try. I have heard enthusiastic reviews about Toa Luau.

The three main attractions for me are: - Pearl Harbor. You need to get tickets in advance for Arizona. They disappear in a second. - Hanauma Bay for snorkeling. Advanced tickets are also needed for this. I recommend early morning. It's calmer. - Diamond Head. You also need advance tickets, but they are much easier to get.

O'ahu is generally a safe place. I feel very safe taking public transportation and mostly safe going hiking alone or to secluded beaches. I'm careful about not leaving valuables in my car or unattended at a beach. People are usually really friendly and will definitely help in an emergency.

Waikiki during the day and night (before 11pm) are usually safe. Shops close around 10/11pm and the traffic declines. Stay clear of alleyways during the night. Kalakaua Ave is usually more lit up than Kuhio Ave, so I’d rather walk there.
