Downtown Austin’s 6th street can be safe unless you are drinking. People WILL talk to you if you are alone or as a group of women. East 6th is similar. Daytime is great for anyone! There are many activities to do and walkability in town is great.
Posted: February 15, 2025Austin is a typical city; remain aware of your surroundings and vigilant, especially when out in the city. Surrounding areas and suburbs tend to be generally safe, with car break ins and theft seem to be more common than other crimes.

Austin is one of the safety cities in the US. Although I always practice things like self awareness and defensive walking when alone, I know I’m very safe. I’ve walked home alone late at night many times and have never had anything happen. If you’re a solo traveler coming to Austin, you are very safe!

People in Austin are very friendly and open minded. Even though Texas is considered conservative Austin itself is pretty democratic and diverse. I’ve only made good experiences around people in Austin and feel pretty safe and welcome overall!

I have never had a problem walking around Austin on my own. There are a lot of homeless people as in many US cities but I have never had them bother me. Quite the opposite they are even friendly. I have heard that the public transport (limited amount of buses and trains) gets a bit weird after dark but I personally don’t take them so I can’t account for that.

Austin is relatively safe but as any big city there are parts that are less safe than others and always take necessary precautions. When taking public transportation be aware of your surroundings and if you’re not familiar with the area avoid walking super late at night.
Posted: December 10, 2024Austin is safe if you stick to the touristy areas. Even then, as a woman, I wouldn't suggest going out and partying on 6th Street alone, ever. Even going with a group it can be dangerous. The gun violence has gotten worse over the years, and it's not worth it. It's a lovely place to see in the daytime and I feel safe walking alone during the day. St night, keep aware of your surroundings and your head on a swivel.

Safe enough for me to wander on my own. I'm always watchful. Many seem unbothered. Public transportation is okay. Some may speak to you if you're a beam of light with openess, as I am! People will leave you alone if you prefer not to speak. Overall, I have friendly encounters with easygoing locals + travelers.
Posted: September 11, 2024It’s a safe city! Coming from a person from Northern California. People are very willing to help one another. I would say the west side of austin is high income and the east is gentrified like most places just be smart and take care! Also hold your drinks close I haven’t experienced this though.
Posted: August 29, 2024Austin is mostly safe especially in touristy areas. Travelers might need to be aware their surroundings in crowded areas like sixth street or Rainey Street. Avoid the dimly lit lake area around Rainey Street at night when alone. Homelessness is a part of the city - just avoid making contact and keep away from tents and you’ll be fine. Public transportation is safe. Downtown in the nightly hours is safe.

Austin is cool place to visit. Only 2.5 hours away from Houston and has completed different vibe. It is university city with lots of young students. Located by the lake Austin it has parks and trails around it. And multiple activities to choose from.

I really enjoyed spending time in Austin. The city is beautiful and clean. There's a lot of trees, it's very green. Even buildings look great. I've been hiking the Ann an Roy Butler hike which makes a loop around the colorado river and Ladybird lake. It was really pleasant. You'll see a lot of wildflowers and animals: turtles, squirrels, birds. You can also see bats at night. If you want to, you will find there places to rent kayaks and paddles. The capitol and the cathedral are really stunning. If you like to hike i would definitely recommend to go to McKinney Falls SP. It's a few minutes out of town. The place is worth it. You can go there to walk or swim, have a picnic... There's a lot of wildflowers there too and the staff is really kind and helpful. Be careful if you go to 6th street at night. I didn't feel very safe there. There's a lot of strange people in the area. I stayed at FIREHOSTEL. The persons working there are rudes and i had problem with my reservation. There's a bar inside the place what makes it very noisy at night. I would prefer a more quiet place outside downtown. I use the bus system to move in town. The ticket for one ride costs 1.25 dollars but if you take a day pass you'll have to pay only 2.5 dollars and it will allow you to make unlimited rides during 24h. I tried to use the app CAPMETRO to buy passes with my phone, but never reach to activate it, so maybe it's safer to buy it in the bus. There are good places to buy food, i would recommend Trader Joes and Whole foods market. I hope it will help. Wish you to spend good moments there if you're coming.

I’m originally from Germany, moved to the US when I was 15 and absolutely love to travel. I spent a lot of time in Southeast Asia and Brazil in college and know first hand how much traveling can cost over time. I just started my first full time and now feel like my wanderlust has exploded so with my limited time to travel now I’d love to host someone here because I love to connect with people from different cultures :)

Excited to expand my travel adventures and meet others along the way! Currently, I'm on a mission to connect back to my roots and ancestry. I'm interested in traveling to find the closest to my lineage over a DNA test. If you've done something like this, would you kindly share insight 🌞
