It’s a city, containing a lot of students so drink is always involved, thus always abit of petty crime about. Only known issues with public transport were with schoolchildren beating people up for a while, while I lived there, but they did employ extra police on the carriages themselves in that area.

Newcastle is a very friendly and safe city to live in. It's very rare that I would feel nervous walking alone at night. Generally it's a great place to live and visit and people will look out for you.

The city is quite safe to walk alone during the day and at night! I have never had issues for all the years I have lived there and I have walked alone at night multiple times. As always tho be on the lookout.
