York is very safe in general. I don't know anyone who's been attacked or burgled in York. Very rarely you'll see people arguing or making inappropriate comments in public but most people are friendly.

York is a very safe place to visit. There are only a few areas on the outskirts that I would avoid late late at night, otherwise very safe. Public transport is good and very safe. As with any UK city, don't leave valuables out etc but you don't need to be overly worried about anything.
