Is Indianapolis good for solo travel?

Safety:Safe

Indianapolis is generally a safe city for solo female travelers, although like with any large urban area, the safety can vary by district. It is advisable to avoid less frequented places and neighborhoods known for higher crime rates. Use of public transportation is typically safe, but it is still recommended to stay vigilant especially at night. With basic precautions, it is relatively safe to roam around during the day.

Transport:Easy

Indianapolis is fairly navigable with a variety of transportation options available. The city has a user-friendly layout with most attractions located around a central canal or downtown area. Utilizing a combination of walking, and public transportation can easily get you around the city. However, the city is quite expansive, and access to areas beyond downtown without a car can be slightly challenging, hence it's not a perfect score.

Things to do:Moderate

Indianapolis offers a variety of activities to keep busy. You can explore the renowned Indianapolis Museum of Art, take leisurely walks along the Central Canal, or experience the adrenaline rush at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. However, the city isn't excessively bustling and may not appeal to those seeking a vibrant nightlife or a dense array of attractions.

Food:Above average

Indianapolis boasts a diverse culinary landscape with a wide range of options. Signature dishes include pork tenderloin sandwiches and sugar cream pie. It also caters to global food cravings with a fair variety of cuisines such as Italian, Mexican, Asian and more. The city promotes farm-to-table practices and you’ll find numerous eateries committed to serving meals made from fresh, local produce. The city's food scene may not be as diverse or renowned as bigger cities, but it's definitely an exciting one, ready to expand your culinary horizons.

Budget:Moderate

Indianapolis poses a moderate budget option for travelers. It is not the cheapest destination, but its cost is reasonable when compared to other American cities. It offers a variety of price ranges in accommodation, food, and activities. Free attractions such as the Indy Cultural Trail and the Indianapolis Artsgarden, along with budget-friendly options like the Indianapolis Zoo and White River State Park, make it a viable option for those keeping an eye on finances.

Is Indianapolis worth visiting?

Is Indianapolis safe for women?

Use common sense and don’t walk around downtown alone. I typically have a friend walk me to my car and use high vigilance when alone. I have never personally been attacked, but I have had friends mugged at gunpoint in the downtown areas. Do not use public transport - ubers and lyfts are great if you don’t have a car.

I feel very safe during the day and people on the street are very helpful. There are certain areas to stay away from (outskirts of downtown) at night. I only usually worry about someone breaking into my car or making a weird comment, not physically harming me.
