There are definitely parts of Indy that are objectively unsafe given high gun violence and drug activity. Staying in the downtown metro area is best way to avoid these neighborhoods on the east and west sides of town. Being mindful of your surroundings is the only advice needed to stay safe as with any city.

I have no personal experience with public transport and have only walked around once (very new to the city), but i was briefly followed. Catcalling is very common. I would not go out at night. However, during the day it is fairly safe.
