There are definitely parts of Indy that are objectively unsafe given high gun violence and drug activity. Staying in the downtown metro area is best way to avoid these neighborhoods on the east and west sides of town. Being mindful of your surroundings is the only advice needed to stay safe as with any city.
Posted: April 4, 2025I have no personal experience with public transport and have only walked around once (very new to the city), but i was briefly followed. Catcalling is very common. I would not go out at night. However, during the day it is fairly safe.

Decently safe but not great for women being alone in my opinion. This seems to be consistent in every city area I’ve travelled to. Mostly just feels unsafe after dark if you’re in an area thats less populated.

Most of the people who say it’s unsafe are fearmongering. Most areas are quite safe unless you’re trying to get into trouble. I’ve spent a lot of time in the “bad” neighborhoods for work and have never felt unsafe. You may get catcalled in the downtown or Broad Ripple areas. Idk about public transit, don’t use it much.
Posted: July 7, 2024during the day indianapolis can be safe because a lot of people here are active. many people exercise outside by themselves or in groups through walking, running, or riding their bikes. i just don’t feel the same sense of security at night. some neighborhoods don’t have much street lighting as well. so i don’t recommend being alone at night.
