Is Atlanta Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Atlanta, as a major city, certainly demands a certain level of caution and awareness, but it generally offers a safe and welcoming environment for solo female travelers. The city offers safe transportation options and areas such as Midtown, Buckhead and Virginia Highland are considered safe neighborhoods. However, taking routine precautions such as avoiding less lit or less populated areas at night, staying aware of your surroundings, and trusting your instincts will ensure that your visit is a pleasant one.

How safe is Atlanta?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Like many big cities, Atlanta, has areas that are perfectly safe and areas that are less so. Walking alone at night is generally safe in the downtown area and other well-lit, continuously busy areas. However, it would be more prudent in less crowded or poorly lit areas to take a cab or Uber, especially if you are new to the city. Always be aware of your surroundings and follow common safety precautions, like not displaying expensive belongings or taking deserted routes. During events, festivals, or concerts, the city is lively even at night, so that leads to a safer environment.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Atlanta, such as the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), is generally reliable and safe during the day, especially in central areas and during rush hours when they are well populated. However, services can be less consistent and safe during off-peak hours and in remote parts of the city. There have been occasional incidents reported, so it is advisable to remain aware of your surroundings, keep your belongings secure, and avoid traveling alone late at night. Ubers and taxis are a safer option during these hours.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

Atlanta is a vibrant city with a rich cultural ambiance. However, like any urban area, women may experience street harassment in varied forms. Instances can range from catcalls to more overtly aggressive behavior. Such occurrence is more prominent towards evening hours primarily in less crowded areas. It's crucial to be assertive, avoid walking alone late at night and always be mindful of your surroundings. Note the presence of security cameras, police patrols, and busy public areas for added safety.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and purse snatching can occur in busy areas of Atlanta, particularly in crowded venues, tourist spots, and public transportation. Always be aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings secure at all times.

Solo travel

Day trip to ATL - Atlanta, GA Visited the Delta Flight museum. Rented car for transport. Took the Tuesday 1 PM tour that was hosted by retired Delta employees who talked about the objects and planes in the museum and their experiences. It was entertaining and educational especially to those who love aviation and history. Good for solo travel due to secure environment of airport and museum. You have to show ID to access the museum since it is on their corporate campus adjacent to the airport. Also enjoyed the tour which was a group of about 15 other friendly people. Only sketchy part was leaving the airport. There were people begging near the Marta station but they left you alone if ignored.

Solo travel

I've been to Atlanta many times. I've used the trains and walked around different kinds of neighborhoods. My only problem with Atlanta is that it's crowded. Besides that, I'm not a fan of southern food after a day or two because it's very unhealthy. But besides that, Atlanta is a cool city to visit. Lots of fun neighborhoods - downtown, midtown, northern part, and Buckhead. All are amazing.

As in all cities, it depends on the circumstances. The central and touristy parts of Atlanta are lovely. Be careful around outskirts and deserted areas, they are typically more unsafe after dark. I have never experienced more than occasional catcalls or men staring at me as I pass them. Stay aware and you will be fine.

About Me

Hola, Bonjour, Hello! I’m an explorer at heart and love getting to know new cultures, especially through meeting locals, learning of their history, and food. I grew up in the Dominican Republic and have lived in 10 cities in North America. I’m in Atlanta now but have lived in Toronto, NYC, and Denver to name a few popular places. Happy to give recommendations, or possibly host someone. Must love dogs though! I have 2 at home that would be there. I look forward to meeting fellow travelers.
