People beware of the police! The locals are mostly friendly and helpful, they don't agree with what the police are pulling off. The police robbed one of our roommates off his wallet and phone. He did not get hurt. Anyhow the police seem to try to sneak drugs into your bag so they can scam you off money to let you go. Please be careful. Also usage of drugs is illegal and police will give you a penalty for it and strip you off your money. Beware.
Posted: December 29, 2024Experienced: June, 2024I really liked Puerto Escondido, these are the beaches that I would recommend: Playa Coral: beach accessible via hotel 50 pesos (with drink) or 100 pesos (buffet + drink). Very pleasant, with few people but lots of waves. There's also access to the hotel swimming pools. Playa Bacocho: beach next to Playa Coral, accessible via the rocks. Not much shade, but a beautiful beach with fewer waves. Difficult to find the exit, as some beach clubs won't let you out. Playa Angelito / Manzanillo: angled beaches, but we went there on a public holiday, so it was impossible to get in because it was so crowded. I think it could be nice on weekday mornings. Quiet beach and clear water Playa Carrizalillo: We went here because the Angelito / Manzanillo beaches were too crowded. Small beach with more shade, perfect for swimming. Stairs with lots of steps to get there. Playa Punta Zicatela: best place to stay, powerful waves. Very cool for watching the sunset and playing volleyball.

Mexico
It's super peaceful, very nice for solo or couple travel, and a great escape from the stress of the city. It's a very safe, calm, and beautiful place where you can surf, spend time by the sea, and watch sunsets. You can also easily travel to nearby villages by bus, and they are very affordable.
Posted: November 23, 2023Experienced: June, 2023I was just in Puerto Escondido in February and I felt very safe there. I found it to be a really nice seaside town with friendly people. It is a big spot on the map for surfers, so there is a bit of a hippie vibe and there are plenty of tourists.

It’s a super small town with a lot of really friendly locals who look out for each other. It’s also very touristy especially in the winter months, so the crime rate is super low because nobody wants to drive off the tourists that make them money. Us girls always have to be cautious of course just like anywhere else, and you’ll probably have some local guys catcalling, but I’ve literally never felt scared or worried for my safety in my 3 years here. I personally wouldn’t go walking alone super late at night but I just wouldn’t do that anywhere. Puerto always gives good vibes.
