How safe is Thessaloniki?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Thessaloniki is generally safe at night, especially in the main areas where there are cafes, restaurants, and other establishments open. However, there can be isolated incidents of pickpocketing or petty theft so it's best to be vigilant. Moreover, it's advisable to avoid poorly lit, less crowded areas. As in any city, it's important to always be aware of your surroundings and follow common-sense safety precautions.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Thessaloniki, is generally safe and it is widely used by locals and tourists alike. Buses are the primary means of transportation and they are frequent and reliable. The tickets are affordable and the routes often cover most of the city, making it an efficient way to travel around. Like any other place, however, it is always recommended to remain aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings, as pickpocketing can occasionally occur, especially at crowded times.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Very low

In Thessaloniki, the level of street harassment is generally low. The city is relatively safe for walking alone, even at night. Locals are respectful and helpful towards tourists, especially women. Incidents of street harassment are not commonly reported, making it a comfortable and safe travel destination.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Thessaloniki, like many other tourist destinations, is relatively safe, but that doesn't mean you can let your guard down. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing, bag snatching, or theft from parked cars are quite prevalent especially in crowded areas and on public transport. Always keep your belongings close to you and be aware of your surroundings. Don't flaunt expensive jewelry or gadgets, as these can be enticing for thieves. Despite this, people are generally friendly and helpful, and the likelihood for confrontation is very low as long as preventative measures are taken.

My friend and I stayed for two days in Thessaloniki. The food was quite tasty and affordable. People were not rude and it was a city where we felt safe. We visited the historical buildings and the castle of the city with our friends who guided and hosted us. We watched the city from the top and I recommend that you definitely watch the sunset here. ☀️☀️

Solo travel

Since I went to Thessaloniki with a tour, the hotel I stayed in was 40 minutes away from the city center, so I don't recommend staying far from the center. Our guide told us that if we wanted to use a taxi, it would cost 45 Euros from the city center to the hotel. It is a city with a young population and nightlife in summer. The promenade and Aristoteles square were incredible! There is a wide variety of bars and if you want to eat there are many tavernas. There is also musical entertainment in the tavernas and the ouzo is really good. We paid 45 euros for the taverna but it was part of the tour package so it was more expensive. Even 20-30 Euros will be enough. Thessaloniki is a really colorful and fun city. I felt very comfortable even in the side streets and did not encounter any problems. I also saw that there are tours from the city center to various beaches. I can say that Thessaloniki is one of the most beautiful places to go in summer!

was a fun city and unsuspectingly fun, close to beautiful beaches. some harassment but everyone was friendly and the food was amazing and within a very easy budget. Very walkable and beautiful views of the ocean, accommodation was easy as well. A lot of cats and cool ruins but overall it is a port city not very beachy itself. In terms of harassment some men selling bracelets were very forward with their tactics sometimes with physical contact, but besides that there is not a lot of negative interaction.

Thessaloniki is overall a safe city for everyone but there are areas that you should be more careful (especially the west side of the city) i leave here almost two years i never experienced something bad outside of catcalling and a small robbery at a club !!!! As women we should always have eyes open but i never felt danger in this city

There is a little bit the feeling of unsafe but if you take care is ok. Basically when there is dark and you’re in a place where is not so crowded you can feel that. But always depend on the neighbourhood
