Generally, it is a safe town. It's full of students as there are 2 big universities in the city. There are some areas that it's better to avoid going alone in the night but are not in the city center and it's very obvious when you are near that it's better not o go closer

The city center and the east suburbs are safe even late at night The west side of the city especially near and after the train station is not safe at all. It's possible to get robbed, scared or rarely harassed. Overall during the day it's a safe city but at night a +1 person is super good to have.
Posted: April 24, 2025I have lived in Thessaloniki for several years now and I consider it a fairly safe city even while walking at night. That said, caution is always a good idea (keeping to busier streets, not flawnting money etc, and avoiding shady areas). Shady areas are considered places mostly west of the city center, especially near the train station (definitely avoid walking there at night). If you decide to join one of the events at the university campus at night, keep in mind it has also had a few unsavory happenings because of the dark spots and zero security, so make sure to go with friends. Like in a lot of European cities the most common issue is pickpocketers, so keep that in mind especially in packed buses.
Posted: April 21, 2025During daytime, central and East parts of Thessaloniki are fairly safe. Police presence is adequate on most days, but corruption on a national level renders their actions ambiguous. I personally find myself sticking to central and East locations, in places with a good amount of buildings and people.
Posted: April 21, 2025It’s okay. I’ve heard about houses being broken into or people getting assaulted in the streets. My neighbourhood is fine so thats why I feel kinda safe. I’m still a woman though so I’m not sure if I’ll ever feel 100% safe.

Thessaloniki is such a beautiful city. The people are so nice and helpful, very social compared to where I come from. There is a lot of catcalling unfortunately, men of all age shouting and whistling, we were approached a few times too but it was handled with a simple story of telling that we're traveling with a man:’) I definitely recommend visiting Halkidiki; rent a car or take the bus! Also Ano Poli is worth it, the cafes and general vibe there made me want to stay there forever. There are a lot of places to eat at, I suggest just walking around and sitting down somewhere that looks good! I spent about 200€ during the 4 days there—that went to food, snacks and transportation. We stayed at an AirBnB which cost about 150€ for 4 nights, it was at a lovely location and easy to get to. If anyone wants our itinerary, just ask! I made a detailed schedule <3

Hello! I'm Lucia ☀️ I’m currently working as an au pair in Thessaloniki, enjoying the culture, the amazing food, and the breathtaking sunsets by the sea. I love meeting new people, discovering hidden spots, and learning about different ways of life. I’m using this app to connect with other travelers in Greece, make new friends, and start exploring more on my own. If you’re around, I’d love to grab a coffee, go for a walk, or plan a weekend getaway together! I’m also looking for travel buddies for future trips around Europe. If you're in the area or have solo travel tips, feel free to reach out! ✨
