The city center and the east suburbs are safe even late at night The west side of the city especially near and after the train station is not safe at all. It's possible to get robbed, scared or rarely harassed. Overall during the day it's a safe city but at night a +1 person is super good to have.
Posted: April 24, 2025I have lived in Thessaloniki for several years now and I consider it a fairly safe city even while walking at night. That said, caution is always a good idea (keeping to busier streets, not flawnting money etc, and avoiding shady areas). Shady areas are considered places mostly west of the city center, especially near the train station (definitely avoid walking there at night). If you decide to join one of the events at the university campus at night, keep in mind it has also had a few unsavory happenings because of the dark spots and zero security, so make sure to go with friends. Like in a lot of European cities the most common issue is pickpocketers, so keep that in mind especially in packed buses.
Posted: April 21, 2025During daytime, central and East parts of Thessaloniki are fairly safe. Police presence is adequate on most days, but corruption on a national level renders their actions ambiguous. I personally find myself sticking to central and East locations, in places with a good amount of buildings and people.
Posted: April 21, 2025It’s okay. I’ve heard about houses being broken into or people getting assaulted in the streets. My neighbourhood is fine so thats why I feel kinda safe. I’m still a woman though so I’m not sure if I’ll ever feel 100% safe.
Posted: April 12, 20257 words : Do not walk alone in the dark! After dark the city gets more dangerous and for a woman it's even worse. I've heard a lot of things and some of them have happened to me too. Things like cat calling, sexual harassment and many more. Please be careful.

Central Thessaloniki is very safe even after dark and until about 2 am. Stay in bigger and well lit places. Avoid strange men and don’t get in any taxi with a different plates than the one you called. You should be safe that way. I haven’t been in the outskirts but I’ve heard from others that it’s not very safe to walk alone as a woman after 12 am as crime rates tend to be higher. Stay safe!
Posted: March 29, 2025As a young woman, I feel safe walking home alone at night. I have been living in Thessaloniki for nearly 3 months, and I have never experienced offensive, harassing or disturbing behaviour from locals so far.

It’s a relatively calm city, but since it’s large, crime levels vary depending on the area. Generally, the eastern parts are safe, as well as the city center due to increased activity. The western areas are less safe.
Posted: February 23, 2025It heavily depends on the places that you visit and how well you know the city, the safety can vary from place and time but it is not a generally dangerous place although I would advise to be careful

Thessaloniki for now seems very safe. It’s not my home town, but for these months I’m living here nothing bad happened. A lot of people said to me not to walk in the street alone when it’s dark, in fact I’m trying to avoid to do this. Public transport is fine and safe during the day (but i guess that is not so safe during the night)

It is a really beautiful city which many different places. I had a really nice time and you get used to the city very fast. However after a few days it can get a little boring, since the city is not too big.

Thessaloniki is the biggest cultural city of northern Greece and here is what I did and how I felt there during my 3 nights stay: ▪︎ It was overall safe, but being pretty crowded during that period I felt like I have to be more alert. There are also a couple neighbourhoods that you would want to avoid as a solo traveler, but again, I didn't have any bad experience whatsoever. ▪︎ I did some self exploring during the first day, just wondering around the streets and parks, which felt quite idyllic during sunset 🌇 ▪︎ Next two days I had some activities booked in advance, such as day trips to Meteora and Edessa or dinner at the Skyline lounge bar, which I totally recommend - good wine, nice view and live music ✨️🥂 ▪︎ Definetly try local food, I was a huge fan of gyros, bougatsa and bougourdi and their freddo cappuccino. ▪︎ My accommodation was located right next to the city center and I paid around 150 euros for 3 nights via Booking. ▪︎ The public transportation is also very easy to use, I had no problem getting around town or between cities, but expect high traffic on the main streets 👀 Overall, definetly visit Thessaloniki if in Greece and if you can, spare some time for beach activities too ⛱️☀️
