Is Bucharest Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Bucharest gets a bad rap online but whilst it's not an amazing destination in itself, it can actually be a really pleasant base for the rest of Romania. There's not a lot of obvious attractions but if you look a little off the beaten path, take day trips out or even explore the more "free range" musuems there's actually plenty to do. The Old Town is cheesy but has some genuinely great nightlife nestled near with some pretty architecture too. My top tips would be to check out the fascinating contrast of Vacaresti national park and take the "ghosts and folklore" walking tour through the city.

Even though I was with a group (we were 4 girls), at night we did not feel very safe with drunk men bothering us and asking to stay with them. The food is not bad but there are not many options for vegetarians. We stayed in a very comfortable b&b and the price was reasonable. We spent around 200 euros for a total of 4 days between food and activities. We went to the famous Bucharest thermal baths and visited the city where the presumed Dracula lived.

Although everybody hates this city, I found myself loving it. I went in with bad expectations but I like it I didn’t feel generally safe, but I went there a lot, and I still love the vibrant city and the activities. Unfortunately, it is very dirty, but there is so much you can do.

SO much fun!! I stayed for 2,5 days. I spent my first afternoon around Parcul Herstrău. Next day I booked a guided bus trip to Brasov, castle Peles and castle bran (Dracula) and third day I did some sightseeing downtown, specially botanical garden and Old town (beautiful!!) At night I went to club control with my host girl and we had a lot of fun! I felt safe all the time without exceptions, which never happened before! People are very respectful and almost everyone speaks English

Bucharest is a very beautiful city. You can explore most of it in 2-3 days, and you will be able to keep the trip low budget. You should visit their museum, bookshop (Carturesti Carusel) and the Parliament. I felt a bit unsafe during nighttime, whenever my male friends weren't around.

Bucharest is mostly safe for women, except the verbal harassment and cat calling can be annoying. Please use ubers instead of the yellow taxis, as those latter ones will try to trick foreigners into spending much more than they have to - sometimes even 10x more. Food is great, diverse and cheap. Everything is open until very late. Public transportation is subpar but there are plenty of ubers.

The hostel i stayed at next to the train station really sucked, it was dirty and smelly with bugs, the dust hadnt been cleaned in forever and the area sucked, it was filled with creeps. The train station isnt the cleanest either. However Calea Victoriei was amazing, beautiful and really safe, filled with nice restaurants with good food and boutiques. it was a very touristy but pretty area. The national art museum is really awesome and cheap too. it has paintings from 1700-2000 featuring french, italian, romanian, spanish artists. It is huge. I also visited the Historic museum which has a replica of The Colosseum and toys and journals from the communist era which was very entertaining to see.

In my opinion, Bucharest is very safe, and also very cheap. I felt safe, even when I was walking alone at about 1 in the morning. Tickets to museums and Uber were very cheap. Not everyone there can speak English, but they do their best to help you even with the language barrier. The hospitality of the Romanians is the best in Europe when it comes to the places I have visited.

I was alone in Bucharest last year and I really enjoyed it there. I walked around a lot on my own, there is a lot to see and do. Plenty of great food and drinks. There is a huge, beautiful cemetery (Cimitirul Bellu) where I walked around for hours, and also Cismigiu park is really beautiful. I went on a one-day trip to Transylvania, which was a bit tacky, but overall it was a great day.

Bucharest is fairly safe. However, especially at night I advise everyone to be wary of their surroundings and to keep a low profile, especially if you don’t speak or look romanian. It is unfortunately the sad reality that internationals are way more likely to be hassled or harassed

Bucharest is safe anytime. There is one area where you have nothing to see and it’s not recommended to go: Ferentari. Rest of the city is completely safe to walk around alone both during day and night.
