Safety overview

Safety at night:Safe

Cluj-Napoca is generally a safe city to walk alone at night, with low crime rates. However, as in any city, caution and vigilance are always recommended. It is advisable to stay in well-lit areas and avoid deserted places or parks after dark. Public transportation operates efficiently and should be utilized when possible. The local population is friendly and helpful, often willing to assist should any issues arise.

Public transportation: Safe

Public transportation in Cluj-Napoca is generally safe and reliable with a network of buses, trams, and trolleybuses servicing the city and its suburbs. It is used often by the local population, including students, workers and the elderly. Crime rates on public transport are low, though pickpocketing can occur, particularly during peak times so always keep an eye on your belongings. Furthermore, the signage and announcements are mostly in Romanian, which might be challenging if you don't speak the language, but many locals and drivers speak English and are willing to help.

Street harassment: Low

Cluj-Napoca is notably safe and welcoming for solo female travelers. Instances of street harassment are relatively low and are generally not a pervasive issue. As always, it's important to remain vigilant, especially at night, but many women have reported feeling secure and comfortable while exploring this vibrant city, even on their own.

Petty crimes:Low

Cluj-Napoca, one of Romania's major cities, is generally safe for solo female travelers. Petty crimes such as pick-pocketing or bag snatching do occur, mainly in crowded places like public transportation or tourist areas. However, these incidents are relatively rare and not as prevalent compared to other major European cities. Extra caution should always be exercised, especially at night and in secluded places.

Tap water:Safe

The tap water in Cluj-Napoca is generally considered safe for drinking. It is treated and meets sanitary standards. However, some people may not be used to the mineral content, which can cause mild stomach upsets. If you're concerned, it is advisable to heat the tap water to kill off any potential bacteria or simply opt for bottled water, especially during your initial days.

Solo travel experience

I went to Cluj for 3 nights in January. Not the right time to go as it was snowing and it was impossible to walk outside without almost falling on your butt every second. The tours from Cluj were very expensive and public transport wasn't great. Didn't really love the town but the locals were so friendly and helpful at all times.

Romania

Hi ladies, I wanted to write this review about Cluj-Napoca because it is a city that completely won my heart. I’m a French student from Paris and came to Romania to do my medecine studies. That’s when I discovered Cluj Cluj is a beautiful city, with it’s fair amount of nature and buildings. There’s always an event there, always a party or some music in a parc. Due to it’s huge number of students, it a very young, social, and eventful place during all year but it’s rather empty in the summer (as all students go back to their home country). What happily shook me the most is it’s safety: Cluj is THE safest place I’ve ever been to in my entire life as a woman. I live here now so I can positively say that my fear is about a 2/10 in here I could go for a walk at 4AM if I wanted to, with my AirPods, without worrying for a minute. Everything is relatively cheap/affordable (except apartments). Most of Romanians talk/understand English Like I really really like it!

About Me

Hey, I work from home since covid. A trip once in a while keeps me happy that I have something to look for. I would like to travel to new places. However, I am a bit afraid to, not just for safety but because I don't want to enjoy such beautiful places by myself.
