I had a good time in Romania. I didn’t always feel very safe because of the many abandoned buildings, even in the center. But I saw a lot of police around. It’s a cheap country, public transport worked well, and even if there weren’t many activities, I still enjoyed a couple of days. I’d recommend it for a low-cost short trip.

Bucharest gets a bad rap online but whilst it's not an amazing destination in itself, it can actually be a really pleasant base for the rest of Romania. There's not a lot of obvious attractions but if you look a little off the beaten path, take day trips out or even explore the more "free range" musuems there's actually plenty to do. The Old Town is cheesy but has some genuinely great nightlife nestled near with some pretty architecture too. My top tips would be to check out the fascinating contrast of Vacaresti national park and take the "ghosts and folklore" walking tour through the city.
Posted: April 25, 2025Experienced: March, 2025Even though I was with a group (we were 4 girls), at night we did not feel very safe with drunk men bothering us and asking to stay with them. The food is not bad but there are not many options for vegetarians. We stayed in a very comfortable b&b and the price was reasonable. We spent around 200 euros for a total of 4 days between food and activities. We went to the famous Bucharest thermal baths and visited the city where the presumed Dracula lived.

born and raised here, it was way less safe in the early 00’s, nowadays its safer than most european capitals. just be careful of pickpockets around very crowded places like north railway station or unirii square
Posted: February 1, 2026I'd say it's generally pretty safe objectively. It doesn't always feel the safest, but it's not very common for stuff to happen and I've walked alone at night. Granted, I was scared shitless and often resorted to pretending I was on a call, but that's also my paranoia 😅

Unless you go to a creepy area, which you can tell by it being very dark, houses looking poor pr bad, Bucharest is extremely safe. You just have to be cautious as everywhere else. I’ve walked at night with no problems till now.
