Bucharest is a large city, hence areas differ greatly from one another - some are safe while others are less so. Gara de Nord is shady, though it's also a wide open space so dangers are visible, if any. Areas like Ferentari, Rahova and Pantelimon are perceived as dangerous because they're very poor neighbourhoods, but according to police statistics, they are not as bad as they seem. Still, I wouldn't advice walking around these areas at night, as a tourist.

Hi Bucharest can be a safe place, but there is also some neighborhoods you must avoid (like Ferentari, Salajan, Jilava), but in rest is a nice place with many activities (like boardgames, bowling, escaperoom ans so on) and many good reataurants (with different price range).

Out of all the cities I've traveled to, Bucharest definately is one of the safest. Of course, depending on the hour and aria you're walking around there might be some sketchy corners, but I think that's to be expected from a capital city with loads of different people in it. Nevertheless, I would feel pretty safe traveling alone as a female in Bucharest.
Posted: June 3, 2025Bucharest is pretty safe. You don't have to worry about anything. Even staying out till late at night is quite safe and walking alone at night is pretty safe. Petty crime is everywhere in the world so you can't rule that out anywhere.
Posted: May 25, 2025If you know how to ignore people then I believe it’s quite safe. There might be people coming up to you but if you act as if they don’t exist. I mean no smile, no eye contact, nothing. Then you will be fine.

I had a good time in Romania. I didn’t always feel very safe because of the many abandoned buildings, even in the center. But I saw a lot of police around. It’s a cheap country, public transport worked well, and even if there weren’t many activities, I still enjoyed a couple of days. I’d recommend it for a low-cost short trip.
