Safety overview

Safety at night:Safe

Sibiu is generally quite safe at night, even for solo female travelers. The city center is well lit and usually there are people around until late in the evening. However, like in any city, it's important to be aware of your surroundings, particularly in less crowded areas. While crime rates are low, occasional incidents may occur. Stick to the main streets and avoid badly lit areas. Using local and trusted transport options, rather than walking in unfamiliar areas at night, can also be beneficial.

Public transportation: Safe

Public transportation in Sibiu is generally considered reliable and safe. The city offers various transport options such as buses, taxis, and trams that are frequently used by locals and tourists. The network is extensive and services are regular. However, just like in any place, it is advisable to stay vigilant and watch your personal belongings, especially during peak commute times. Overall, it is a practical and safe way to explore the city.

Street harassment: Low

Sibiu is generally considered a safe city with a lower level of street harassment. As is the case everywhere, it's important to stay aware of your surroundings and keep yourself safe. However, the locals are usually polite and respectful towards tourists. That being said, it's always recommended to avoid walking alone late at night in less crowded areas. Don't be surprised if locals express curiosity about your country of origin, but it's usually out of genuine interest rather than ill-intent.

Petty crimes:Low

Sibiu, being one of the safest cities in Romania, usually experiences a low level of petty crimes. However, it's always essential to keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded places as pickpocketing can occur. Always ensure that your purse, phone, and other valuables are secure. Moreover, it's advised to avoid walking alone late at night in less populated areas.

Tap water:Safe

While tap water in Sibiu is generally considered safe to drink, it's a good idea to use bottled water for drinking as a precautionary measure. The water quality can vary and it may contain minerals unfamiliar to your system that could cause upset stomach. However, it's perfectly safe for brushing teeth or washing.

Solo travel experience

Sibiu was one of my favorite places in Romania. The city is pretty small, very walkable and there are interesting places all over. I didn't have any safety issues.
