Is Bucharest Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Bucharest is generally safe for solo female travelers. Romania is known for its people being friendly and willing to help out. As with any big city, there are areas that are less safe and crime can occur, especially at night. It's recommended to keep alert and aware of your surroundings, especially when alone. How safe is Bucharest?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Bucharest is generally safe to walk alone at night, especially in areas with high tourist activity such as the old town. As in any major city, it's advisable to stay in well-lit areas, avoid desolate streets or alleys, and always be aware of your surroundings. Most locals are friendly and helpful, but it's wise to be cautious of overly friendly strangers. It is also highly recommended to use trusted taxi services or ride-sharing apps if traveling longer distances at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Bucharest is generally safe and reliable for solo female travelers. The city has an extensive network of buses, trams, and metro lines that are frequently used by locals and tourists alike. It can get crowded during rush hours so you should be aware of your belongings to prevent pickpocketing. Late night transportation is less dependable, so it's advisable to use trusted taxi companies or ride-sharing apps. Overall, with a bit of caution and common sense, using public transport in Bucharest should not pose major safety concerns.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Bucharest is relatively safe for solo female travelers. Instances of street harassment happen, yet they are not a common occurrence. As in every major city, caution is advised, especially during late hours. Most locals are friendly and respectful, making Bucharest an enjoyable place for solo travel.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Bucharest, as the capital city of Romania, has a moderate risk of petty crimes. Travelers may encounter incidents like pickpocketing or bag snatching, especially in crowded areas such as public transportation and tourist spots. However, the city is generally safe provided sensible precautions are taken. Always remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings to minimize opportunities for petty theft.
Tap water:

Tap water:Safe

The tap water in Bucharest is generally safe for consumption. It undergoes thorough treatment and regular testing processes to ensure compliance with local health and safety standards. However, some travelers and locals prefer bottled water due to potential differences in taste and minor contaminants that can persist post-treatment.

Solo travel experience

Bucharest is mostly safe for women, except the verbal harassment and cat calling can be annoying. Please use ubers instead of the yellow taxis, as those latter ones will try to trick foreigners into spending much more than they have to - sometimes even 10x more. Food is great, diverse and cheap. Everything is open until very late. Public transportation is subpar but there are plenty of ubers.

The hostel i stayed at next to the train station really sucked, it was dirty and smelly with bugs, the dust hadnt been cleaned in forever and the area sucked, it was filled with creeps. The train station isnt the cleanest either. However Calea Victoriei was amazing, beautiful and really safe, filled with nice restaurants with good food and boutiques. it was a very touristy but pretty area. The national art museum is really awesome and cheap too. it has paintings from 1700-2000 featuring french, italian, romanian, spanish artists. It is huge. I also visited the Historic museum which has a replica of The Colosseum and toys and journals from the communist era which was very entertaining to see.

Solo travel experience

In my opinion, Bucharest is very safe, and also very cheap. I felt safe, even when I was walking alone at about 1 in the morning. Tickets to museums and Uber were very cheap. Not everyone there can speak English, but they do their best to help you even with the language barrier. The hospitality of the Romanians is the best in Europe when it comes to the places I have visited.

Solo travel experience

Things to do: - University Square - Romanian Athenaeum - Macca-Villacrosse Passage - Stavropoleos Monastery - Triumphal Arch Safety: I felt as safe as in any other large European city. Recommendations: Bucharest is a city that must be seen. This is something you probably have never experienced before. The city is dirty and beautiful at the same time.

To Do: - Parliament Palace - Romanian Atheneum - Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum - Triumphal Arch - King Michael I Park - Cișmigiu Gardens Safety: I felt pretty safe, but it's a city with a population of 2 million, so you should be careful. Accommodation: I stayed at the T5 Social Hostel. Great hostel, wonderful people and I really enjoyed the atmosphere! Recommendations: Try to avoid taxis. They might try to cheat you. I recommend Uber, it's cheap and safe.

I don't think it is the safest city but as long as you won't take the yellow taxi and you watch your bag carefully, nothing bad will happen. There are drunk people and bad ones but it depends on everyone experience. I feel safe most of times living here.

I think Bucharest safety improved a lot in the last 15 years. Bad things may happen anywhere but I wouldn’t say it’s a normal daily occurrence in Bucharest. As a woman I feel pretty safe, or at least safer than I felt 10 years ago. I would recommend anyone to take the normal safety precautions while travelling - just take an Uber at night, don’t keep your phone in the back pocket etc. It’s always better to be safe than sorry 😁

I was alone in Bucharest last year and I really enjoyed it there. I walked around a lot on my own, there is a lot to see and do. Plenty of great food and drinks. There is a huge, beautiful cemetery (Cimitirul Bellu) where I walked around for hours, and also Cismigiu park is really beautiful. I went on a one-day trip to Transylvania, which was a bit tacky, but overall it was a great day.

Group travel experience

We loved Bucharest and Brasov. We booked a one-day tour with Get Your Guide, who took us to Brasov from Bucharest. Brasov is so charming. The Brasov sign (similar to the Hollywood sign) on the hill is also beautiful. In Bucharest, the Old Town was truly great, especially in the evenings. During the day it was more calm with all the charming cafes, my favorite was the Van Gogh cafe. I recommend stopping at Carturesti Carusel (carousel bookstore), at the very top there is a charming cafe with a view over the bookstore below.

About Me

Hi, I’m Laura and I’m a 26 yo Romanian living in Bucharest 😄 I work in the IT field and I’m a creative and open person. I’m into K-Pop, I love going out and taking walks. Been to therapy for more than 2 years already and it’s changed my life 🙌 My first solo travel experience was in university, I slept in a bunk bed in an 80-beds tent in Munich and we all ate sausages and drank bear by the fire in the evening - 30 EUR well spent I’d say 😝 Planning my next trip to Budapest - 23-27 of June. Feel free to reach me out to talk and maybe we can plan something nice!
