I had a good time in Romania. I didn’t always feel very safe because of the many abandoned buildings, even in the center. But I saw a lot of police around. It’s a cheap country, public transport worked well, and even if there weren’t many activities, I still enjoyed a couple of days. I’d recommend it for a low-cost short trip.

Bucharest gets a bad rap online but whilst it's not an amazing destination in itself, it can actually be a really pleasant base for the rest of Romania. There's not a lot of obvious attractions but if you look a little off the beaten path, take day trips out or even explore the more "free range" musuems there's actually plenty to do. The Old Town is cheesy but has some genuinely great nightlife nestled near with some pretty architecture too. My top tips would be to check out the fascinating contrast of Vacaresti national park and take the "ghosts and folklore" walking tour through the city.
Posted: April 25, 2025Experienced: March, 2025Even though I was with a group (we were 4 girls), at night we did not feel very safe with drunk men bothering us and asking to stay with them. The food is not bad but there are not many options for vegetarians. We stayed in a very comfortable b&b and the price was reasonable. We spent around 200 euros for a total of 4 days between food and activities. We went to the famous Bucharest thermal baths and visited the city where the presumed Dracula lived.

Although everybody hates this city, I found myself loving it. I went in with bad expectations but I like it I didn’t feel generally safe, but I went there a lot, and I still love the vibrant city and the activities. Unfortunately, it is very dirty, but there is so much you can do.

SO much fun!! I stayed for 2,5 days. I spent my first afternoon around Parcul Herstrău. Next day I booked a guided bus trip to Brasov, castle Peles and castle bran (Dracula) and third day I did some sightseeing downtown, specially botanical garden and Old town (beautiful!!) At night I went to club control with my host girl and we had a lot of fun! I felt safe all the time without exceptions, which never happened before! People are very respectful and almost everyone speaks English

If you go to the popular areas, it's safe. At night, if you are not alone, I'd say you have no thing to worry about. There areas that are not safe, but there is also nothing the visit there. The nice places are mostly safe.
Posted: October 4, 2025Bucharest is a safe city, if you take basic measures, of course. Avoid interacting with beggars and suspicious persons and you will be fine. Walking alone at night it's not recommended anywhere, but still, I never felt on danger when I did it in Bucharest.
Posted: September 10, 2025Bucharest is an amazing city with friendly people and great public transportation. It feels really nice and safe to walk even late at night. Most people here speak are perfect English. They are very helpful and locals are generous and very welcoming.
Posted: September 6, 2025The city is pretty safe and you can travel as solo female traveler, but as for all cities, you have to be careful after dark with your belongings or on some streets that have no public lights in general.

Bucharest is a large city, hence areas differ greatly from one another - some are safe while others are less so. Gara de Nord is shady, though it's also a wide open space so dangers are visible, if any. Areas like Ferentari, Rahova and Pantelimon are perceived as dangerous because they're very poor neighbourhoods, but according to police statistics, they are not as bad as they seem. Still, I wouldn't advice walking around these areas at night, as a tourist.
