Safety overview

Safety at night:Safe

Viareggio is generally a safe and welcoming city even at night. It maintains a relatively low crime rate. The streets are well-lit and it's usually crowded until late, especially in summer due to the vibrant nightlife. However, like everywhere, it's always important to stay vigilant and take typical travel precautions, such as avoiding desolate areas and not flaunting valuables.

Public transportation: Safe

Public transportation in Viareggio is generally considered safe. Buses and trains are readily available and reliable for both short and long distances. Often they are crowded but incidents of pickpocketing and harassment are relatively low. Just be sure to stay alert and aware of your surroundings, especially during late at night.

Street harassment: Low

Viareggio generally has a welcoming and safe environment, especially for female travelers. Street harassment is relatively uncommon but, like any place, it can occasionally occur. People are usually respectful and helpful, and the region generally exhibits a deep respect for women. Of course, it is always important to remain alert and take basic safety precautions, particularly during the night or in less crowded areas.

Petty crimes:Low

Viareggio generally has a safe and relaxed atmosphere. Petty crimes like pickpocketing or purse-snatching are not common, but as a reminder, one should always remain vigilant, especially in crowded places or tourist areas. The Italian people are typically warm and helpful, adding to the overall sense of security.

Tap water:Safe

Tap water in Viareggio is generally of good quality and safe to consume. However, it's advised to always have a taste first since mineral content can vary greatly depending on local supply systems. If you do find an unusual taste, you may want to opt for bottled water for drinking, but cooking and brushing teeth with tap water should be fine.

Solo travel experience

Viareggio is an elegant, peaceful beach resort pretty close to Cinque Terre. Most visitors were italian and the vibe was very chill, friendly and rafinated at the same time. I rented a room with a local italian woman, in a beautiful epoque house. You can walk to the beach, restaurants, train station, supermarket etc but I there were many cycling aswell. There is live music every night and many nice places to dine and have a drink. The beach is well organized and clean.
