Trier is usually safe during daytime. At night I don't like to walk around just by myself... I have done it a few times but if there is another way I'd take it. Public Transports are super safe. I never had any issues there...

Trier is a safe town, there are lots of students (primarily psychology students) here and you can walk alone at night and feel safe. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that busses only go till 12pm during the week. Since Trier is very walkable as long as you stay in the valley, that is not a big problem, but should be noted.
