I live in a small town near Giessen and I would say the crime rate here is roughly zero. Of course, there are also a few minor crimes, like smoking a little weed or selling a few things, but we live in a very rural area and have a good community.

Overall, Gießen is a relatively safe city with a large student population, thanks to its universities. Most crimes, such as theft, tend to target businesses rather than individuals. That said, like in many urban areas, it’s wise to stay alert, especially at night. I’d personally avoid being alone around the train station at night or walking through dimly lit, less frequented areas, as there have been reports of sexual harassment and assaults. Trust your instincts and use available safety...
Posted: May 22, 2025Very safe for women, there are weird places like the train station at night - but you don’t have to be worried about getting raped or robbed as people there are usually passed out so they might weird you out but they are not dangerous

Hi, I’m Sophia! I’m studying law at the University of Giessen and was born and raised in Cologne, Germany. I love traveling and meeting new people. After finishing school, I spent a gap year in Panama and later volunteered as an English teacher in Peru. During that time, I also had the opportunity to travel through Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize. I also visited Costa Rica during my gap year. My most recent trip took me to Santa Barbara, California, where I completed an internship at the local court. I’m currently planning a trip to Indonesia after graduating in July. I’d love to connect with inspiring travel buddies and like-minded people! :)
