Is Essen Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Essen is generally very safe, I would avoid streets like Kettwiger Straße/ near townhouse at night though because its a drug hotspot. Also areas like Altendorf and Altenessen I would avoid at night. Best to go for bars, food and socializing is Rüttenscheid

I lived and still work there and found the city safe. There are a lot of quiet neighbourhoods where you feel really comfortable to walk around even at night. Even at the train station at night I felt ok, no one bothered me.

I lived in Essen for 4 months and I find that it has mixed safety. After 9pm I felt tense walking around alone. I have experienced weird looks from time to time from drunk people walking in groups. Especially the train station (although well-lit) can have a rough vibe in general. It was often the case that some people were completely disoriented, intoxicated and loud and police weren't present at all times, so it wasn't the best feeling. Stay safe girlies :)

Essen is rather safe. Especially the southern part of the city where I live. The north can be a bit rougher, starting at the city center and the main station. It’s quite alright (especially in the area I live) but the area near the main station is not the best since there are a lot of weird drunk people, so it needs to be avoided at night. But I never had any issues

Pretty safe I would say! I’ve lived here my whole life and it really just depends on where you go like which part of the city. The Central Train Station may seem shady, but nothing has ever happened to me there, just stay away from weirdos and don’t even look at them(!) Also Altenessen isn’t to safe for women and in general😬I personally just don’t go there.
