I would highly suggest Crete if you are going to Greece. It’s not usually on the “must-do” list but it should be. It has beautiful coastal cities with blue harbours and white sandy beaches. As the two towns Chania and Heraklion are much smaller, they have somewhat of a smaller town vibe and I felt very safe. If you are able I would suggest renting a scooter like I did and exploring inland where you’ll find cute little villages tucked away and some amazing views, and of course- more beaches.
