About me

Hey! My name is Mafie and I come from Crete, Greece. For half my life I have lived all over the country, but eventually I returned to Chania (Khanià) a few years ago, and moved into our summer house in Kalamaki beach, where I have spent most of my childhood vacations. Currently, I am being hosted by my cat Hôla who, of course, is the main tenant!! Beyond being local, I've always loved cretan nature, and its unique and deserty magnificence! I often go for wild camping and hiking, and you are most welcome to join me! I have big experience in hosting people (I have used Couch Surfing since 2012, airBnB since 2015, TrustRoots and BeWelcome since 2022 and back in the day, when I had a fb profile, I also used Host A Sister. Fyi, I have used all of them mostly as a host. I love hosting people and getting to know them and share culture, ideas and experiences. To me, hosting experiences can be as intense as a trip abroad (minus the expenses, lol), thus I constantly try to host people. The whole experience eventually made me more open-minded and tolerant towards others, while helping me form a huge part of who I am today. That is why the changes on CS led me to choose other platforms, in hopes of finding an alternative to what I consider Hosting people actually stands for. I just hope my guests enjoy the chance as much as I do :)

Is Chania worth visiting?

Couple travel

I felt very safe in Crete and chania, however keep in mind it is very very touristy. If you go to Crete I would definitely rent a car, otherwise you have to pay around 60 euros to go to each of the places you will want to visit. We paid 120 euros to rent a car for 3 days, I would say it was worth it if you can share this price with others! In Crete I really would not recommend the cities if you don’t feel like being in croweded overtouristy places, the tourism also makes the costs quite expensive- around 15 euros for a meal anywhere on the island. Definitely go to baloos lagoon and do a boat tour one day, this was an amazing nature experience. Also visit seitan Limani if you like hiking, but keep in mind it’s very crowded!! However very worth it! Elafonisi beach which is very popular is crowded but pretty, don’t expect pink sand though!
