Wuppertal has safe areas and areas, where I wouldn't be alone as a girl at night. So it depends where you are. The City for example is okay. Furthermore I haven't had any issues here in the past. I can recommend it.
Posted: May 2, 2025Pretty safe. Certain places such as Oberbarmen are less safe and should be avoided after dark or only visited while being more aware of surroundings. Any bigger city experiences petty crime but I have not personally met anyone who has been attacked in the years I have lived here. As a woman I feel safe walking around after dark and using public transport when alone.

The middle of Wuppertal (Elberfeld) is pretty safe. I also walk during the night, on Bahnhof are some homeless people I keep distance to. But also some other people walk there in the night, so I feel safe. I would nod recommend to visit Unterbarmen/barmen/Oberbarmen in the night but during day it's totally fine

Its a City with great and not so great areas, but at the most places you can feel safe. I live next to the City Wuppertal in a very safe street with the option beeing fast in the big citys where you can feel safe to 80 %.

I think all in all its okay. But we have a lot of homeless people and people with background from other countries. Both of them are often in big groups, which I don't like. You should probably just avoid central places.
Posted: January 5, 2025Wuppertal is like most of Germany pretty safe. But typically, for the highly populated West Germany, we have a lot of different people and poverty. Unlike compared to eg. Bavaria, we have a lot more drunks/addicts sitting at train stations, which is normally not a problem but kinda makes you feel uncomfortable from time to time in the evening/night. Wuppertal also has the reputation to be a bit more marginal than the other cities in the region. There have been robberies in the night around Wuppertal-Oberbarmen(east of the city around train station) and Wuppertal-Elberfeld(city center around main station). But usually, it is always men that get mugged. I'm living here for 14 years and passing Wuppertal-Oberbarmen every evening on my way home and feel usually pretty safe. Sometimes, some drunk men shout something, but that's all and will be ignored. Wuppertal is besides that a really nice city with a living student quarter and historic buildings. It's also one of the greenest cities in Germany and worth a visit for short trip <3
