POA is a generally safe big city for brazilian standards if you take proper safety measures. Use uber to move around in the city, don’t walk alone after dark, watch out for your drinks at parties, and stick to the busier areas.

It’s safe for women, but it’s not recommended for you to walk alone at night because of robberies. If you are with other people, it’s fine! Just don’t walk with your phone out or your jewelry showing too much because it’s easier to get targeted like that. But if you are with other people, not alone it’s gonna be easier for you to just walk around without a worry. Crowded places are definitely easier for you to get robbed, but I would say people just have to save your bags or take care of your things because of pick pockets.

Porto Alegre is a capital in the south of Brazil so you need to take all the precautions you would in any big city, but it’s not dangerous as long as you stick to the nice areas of town, like the more central areas such as Moinhos de Ventos, Petrópolis, Montserrat and such.

Porto Alegre is safer than most brazilian cities. However, you should be cautious about robbery and not walk alone in the dark. There are some neighborhoods that are more dangerous, including the commercial center and suburbs.

I consider Porto Alegre a fairly safe city, like an 8/10. As with any big city, you should watch out for your belongings and keep your phone in a safe place (not in your back pocket or exterior backpack pocket), as pickpocketing happens sometimes. After midnight, I avoid walking alone in some areas, but taking ubers has been safe. I live in a very safe apartment building, and break-ins are really not common. In Porto Alegre you will see a lot of homeless people in the downtown area, but they are pretty harmless. Some of them will just ask you for money or food, and every now and then you get a random crazy person - also harmless 95% of the time.
