Salvador is a 3 million people capital city in Brazil. As in any big city, crime is an issue, but I don't feel unsafe very often. I'd recommend to always keep your belongings close to you, wear backpacks turned to the front not on the back, don't give your phone to strangers take photos, always be aware of your surroundings trying to identify some suspect moviment, take an uber instead of public transportation always it's possible, don't walk alone in deserted streets (day or night), don't get drunk or do drugs with strangers, don't trust strangers. I believe you should take care of yourself just like in any city with medium crime rates.
