Solo Female Travel in Merzouga

Merzouga, a small village in southeastern Morocco, is renowned as the gateway to Erg Chebbi, a colossal expanse of sand dunes north of the village. Nestled in the Sahara Desert and located about 35 kilometers southeast of Rissani, Merzouga features some of the tallest sand dunes in Morocco. The village is famous for its spectacular sunsets and the unique experience of camel trekking. It offers the charming hospitality of Berber lifestyle, where you can spend the night in traditional Bedouin tents and enjoy local music and cuisine. Another fascinating allure is the Dayet Srji Salt Lake, just west of Merzouga, which attracts a variety of birds including seasonal flamingos.

Safety:Safe

Merzouga is generally considered safe for women traveling alone. However, as anywhere else, it's important to take certain precautions. Try to dress modestly in order to respect the local culture, and avoid walking alone at night especially in isolated areas. Locals are usually helpful and respectful. Tourist scams can occasionally happen, so be sure to book tours through reputable agencies. There is a constant police presence which also lends to the feeling of safety.

Transport:Moderate

Merzouga, though a small town, is rather spread out making it slightly challenging to move around easily. The terrain can be difficult at times, especially in the desert area. English is not widely spoken, which could sometimes create communication barriers while asking directions. However, locals are usually friendly and attempt to help. Prepare for a mix of walking and hiring local transportation for longer stretches.

Things to do:Interesting

Merzouga offers a great variety of unique activities that captivate solo female travelers. From indulging in the serenity of the Sahara Desert, enjoying camel trekking, experiencing Berber culture, to witnessing beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the golden dunes. It creates enriching and liberating experiences. However, it might have less appeal to those who prefer urban settings and vast cultural or entertainment options. Outdoor enthusiasts and those looking for tranquility will find it especially appealing.

Food:Above average

Merzouga offers a wide range of Moroccan cuisine that you will love if you enjoy flavorsome, spiced meals. From the traditional Berber Tajine, couscous to flavorful lamb or chicken dishes, the options are many. Fresh fruits and veggies are also common. But the scope for international cuisine is limited. The uniqueness lies in their cultural meals eaten under beautiful starry skies or around campfires in Berber tents. The authenticity of the food along with its traditional preparation methods is what brings the diversity and charm.

Budget:Moderate

Merzouga is moderately budget-friendly. The cost of meals, accommodation, and local transportation is relatively manageable compared to other popular tourist destinations. However, popular activities like the coveted Sahara Desert tours could be on the higher end, but with careful planning and negotiating, your expenses can remain reasonable.

Is Merzouga worth visiting?

Solo travel experience

I did Merzouga 3 days/2 nights - one night in a hotel on the way, and one night in the desert. It was magical. We pulled our mats outside the tent and slept under the open sky. Incredible experience.

Solo travel experience

I did the standard three-day tour from Marrakech with various stops along the way (Aït Benhaddou, Dades Gorges, Tinghir, Todra Gorge), but it was definitely too touristy and really crowded. However, the sunset and sunrise were amazing.
