Situated in the heart of Hungary, nestled between the Bakony Mountains and Lake Balaton, is the enchanting city of Veszprem; a fascinating blend of old and new. Known as the "City of Queens" for its historical significance as the coronation site of Hungarian queens, Veszprém exudes an irresistible charm with its medieval architecture, vibrant cultural scene, and a distinctive central castle district. Apart from exploring the St. Michael's Cathedral and the Castle Hill, which offers panoramic views of the city, one can also indulge in the annual VeszprémFest, an international multi-art festival that brings in music lovers from around the world. Safety:Very safe

Veszprem is generally quite safe for solo female travelers. The residents are friendly, and the city is well-policed. However, it is still important to follow standard travel precautions such as not walking alone at night in deserted areas, securing your personal belongings, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption.

Transport:Easy

Veszprém is fairly easy to navigate. It is a small city where key attractions are close to each other which makes walking an option. There is also well-organized public transportation including local buses and taxis available. English is not widely spoken compared to larger cities like Budapest, which might pose a slight challenge when seeking directions but most young people will understand and are generally helpful. It's advisable to have a translation app handy. Additionally, there are plenty of signs in English around tourist areas.

Things to do:Moderate

Veszprem offers a moderate range of activities for solo female travelers. It is rich in history which is evident in its medieval architecture including the Veszprém Castle and unique structures such as the Firewatch Tower. There are a number of interesting museums such as Laczkó Dezső Museum, and picturesque parks too. The city has good local food which can be explored in various restaurants and cafes. However, the overall range of activities might not keep one occupied for a longer duration.

Food:Above average

Veszprem offers a good selection of Hungarian cuisine with few international options. The food is flavorful, hearty, and well-prepared, highlighting the country's traditional dishes such as goulash and chicken paprikash. Near the Castle District, there are bistro-style places where you can enjoy a meal while overlooking the city. However, the lack of variety in terms of global cuisines may not appeal to everyone. Vegetarian and vegan options can be somewhat limited as well.

Budget:Affordable

Veszprem is generally affordable for travelers. Accommodation, food, transportation, and entertainment costs are comparatively lower than in many Western European countries. However, prices can increase slightly during peak tourist season or local festivals.

Is Veszprem worth visiting?

Local tips

To my way of thinking Veszprém is safe for women because it’s not a huge city and there are a lot of well-educated people in there. Although I rarely go out I think it is safe at night too. In general, there is not a great nightlife. Absolutely few people are in the streets at night. What I love the most in Veszprém are the theatres, restaurants, coffee houses, breakfast places, bakeries, confectionaries, shops and boutiques... I could recommend to walking around the castle, visiting the ZOO and walking in the Séd stream valley. Furthermore, Balaton lake is closed to Veszprém, especially town of Balatonalmádi and Balatonfüred. 🤗
