Is Memphis Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Memphis, as any big city, has areas that are safe and less safe. Generally, areas like Downtown, Midtown, East Memphis, and the Cooper-Young District are safe and tourists frequently visit without incidents. There is a visible law enforcement presence especially in tourist areas. However, like in all large cities, it is advised to maintain awareness of your surroundings at all times and take basic precautionary measures, such as avoiding less populated or poorly lit areas late at night, and not displaying expensive possessions openly.

How safe is Memphis?

Safety at night:Unsafe

Memphis can be quite a mixed bag when it comes to night safety, depending heavily on which part of the city you're in. While there are certainly areas that are safe and frequented by tourists, it's worth noting that Memphis has higher crime rates than the U.S. national average. Walking alone at night is not highly recommended. As with any city, especially if you're unfamiliar with it, it's critical to stay vigilant, avoid poorly lit or isolated areas, and to make use of reliable and safe transportation options when possible.

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Memphis, such as the MATA buses and trolleys, typically operates reliably and is relatively safe during the day. However, many lines stop running relatively early in the evening, and service can be sparse in some outlying areas. It's also advised to stay aware of your surroundings, particularly when traveling alone or at night. As with any other city, there can occasionally be incidents of crime or misconduct. Additionally, using ride sharing apps like Uber and Lyft is also an option in Memphis and these are generally considered safe to use.

Street harassment:Moderate

While Memphis is generally safe and welcoming for solo female travelers, street harassment can sometimes be an issue in certain areas. However, like any city, incidents often depend on location, time of day, and other factors. Locals are usually friendly and helpful, but it's always important to be vigilant and take precautions, such as avoiding walking alone late at night in certain areas, maintaining awareness of surroundings, and not engaging with individuals who behave inappropriately.

While Memphis is a city rich in culture and musical history, it has its share of petty crimes. Great city to do a solo trip in. *felt safe *lots of food options, everything is decently priced. There’s something for everyone *I spent about 700 for a weekend visit *stayed at the Peabody hotel *

Is Memphis safe for women?

I currently live in Olive branch Mississippi, which is very close to Memphis, Tennessee. There’s a lot of crime in Memphis & I try to not go unless I have to . Memphis was rated one of the top murder cities of and is not very safe. I would recommend only go to Beale Street during the day.

I think it can be okay, if you keep your wits about you and stay in the safe / more populated areas. Tourist heavy areas like Beale and Main Street will be fine at night. Midtown is also good. But make sure to get a car since we essentially don’t have public transportation and make sure you don’t leave your valuables in your car. And do not honk at other drivers. I haven’t had any issues living in Memphis yet, but I am also very cognitive of where I am and where I am going.

Solo travel experience

Memphis was by far my favorite place I went to on my road trip, but I am also a major Elvis fan. I would definitely say that it’s worth it to spend tickets on Sun Studio. I got to hold a microphone that Elvis and Johnny Cash and others touched! As for Graceland, if you want to spend the money, go for it. However, if you don’t want to spend money, you can walk in for free from 7:30-8:30 in the morning. I parked in the little area by the wall of all the signatures and there was no problem with ticketing. For free, you can see Elvis’ tombstone and those of his family as well. You can also get a pretty good view of the house! Besides that, I went to the Arcade restaurant that Elvis would frequent and later got coffee at the same place. I had great experiences with the food and the coffee. If you’re an Elvis fan, though, look out for the past booth on the left. It’s the Elvis booth. I sadly missed that opportunity. I also walked along Beale Street both in the day and night and it was amazing. B.B. King’s restaurant had amazing music and was worth the price to get in!

Solo travel experience

Graceland is a must-see spot in Memphis. The National Civil Rights Museum is also worth noting. Public transportation is not the best. On the other hand, the zoo is good, and Beale St is a place you absolutely must visit.
